POSTS STORIES REELS

One hundred years. One hundred books. One rather special beginning.

After months of writing, drawing and wondering, 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough is finally on its way from the printers.

Just 100 signed and individually numbered copies will form this first Private Press edition, each with its own place in the story.

Some already have homes waiting for them.

This week, I will be opening orders to those on the Private Press invitation list, giving them the first opportunity to choose and purchase their numbered and signed copy.

This is the last call to join the invitation list before it opens.

There is something rather lovely about a book beginning its journey in such small numbers, knowing that each copy will travel into someone's life, perhaps finding its place on a favourite shelf, beside a familiar chair, or somewhere a little bear might feel quite at home.

🍯 Join the Private Press invitation list through the link in my bio.

A little honey, a few busy bees, and a world that asks for very little. 🍯🐝

In 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough, I explore the quiet wisdom of A. A. Milne’s world, where happiness could be found in the smallest things.

This original pen and ink illustration belongs to that same philosophy. A simple beehive, a little patience, and the pleasure of noticing what is easily overlooked.

Perhaps there is something rather wonderful about a world in which a pot of honey is quite enough.

What if the very thing that makes us different is also what makes us so valuable to one another?

Chapter 8, Different Ways to be Human, explores something deeply human within the Hundred Acre Wood.

Piglet worries, yet finds courage. Eeyore carries his sadness. Tigger bounces through life with extraordinary enthusiasm. Rabbit seeks order, Owl likes to be right, and Pooh somehow makes room and time for everyone.

Each character brings a different temperament, with all its wonderful complications and unexpected strengths.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about Milne’s little Wood is that everyone has a place within it, exactly as they are.

A Little Something About Time

Pooh always seemed to have time, although he was never especially interested in keeping it.

Time for honey, time for a walk, time to sit with a friend.

So I was rather enchanted to discover that, around 1928, A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard were considering a clock for Pooh and Piglet.

Milne had written two possible inscriptions for Shepard's drawing, A Little Something, gently encouraging the friends towards punctuality.

Shepard circled his preferred wording and added a small note in pencil: “I like this one EHS.”

The original handwritten document was discovered tucked inside a copy of Shepard's 1957 memoir, Drawn from Memory. The drawing itself never appeared in the published Pooh books.

Denise at D&D Galleries very kindly shared these remarkable photographs with me. To see Milne's handwriting, his alterations and Shepard's pencilled response is to glimpse a little moment of their creative partnership.

I rather like the thought of two extraordinary men making a clock for a bear who always seemed to understand what time was for, rather than how to measure it.

This little piece of literary history is looking for a new home. The original handwritten manuscript, together with the book in which it was discovered, is currently available to purchase through D&D Galleries.

With grateful thanks to Denise at D&D Galleries, who kindly provided these historical photographs and permission to share them.

This discovery feels especially meaningful to me because it touches upon something I explore in Chapter 4 of my book, the curious way Pooh inhabits time.

“There is little need here to divide time into productive units. Time passes simply because that is what it does, without defence or justification.”

Part of my continuing exploration of 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough.

Can anyone really own a bear? 🧸

In 1930, A. A. Milne granted the American merchandising rights to Winnie the Pooh to Stephen Slesinger. By 1961, Disney had entered the story, and a small bear from an English nursery was beginning a remarkable commercial journey.

A century later, Pooh has been the subject of contracts, copyright disputes and extraordinary sums of money. Yet the little bear continues to occupy a place in our collective childhood that seems quite beyond the reach of legal ownership.

The bear in this photograph is Christopher Robin’s original Winnie the Pooh, a much loved toy whose ordinary beginnings gave rise to something extraordinary.

In 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough, I return to this question in Chapter 13, exploring the difference between the ownership we establish through law and the quieter sense of belonging that grows through memory, affection and imagination.

It is a question that reaches into the heart of my book, and perhaps into the heart of Pooh himself.

Can anyone really own a bear?

A hundred years later, I rather like to think that we each hold a little piece of him.

A Little Piece of Ashdown Forest 🍂✨

I was staying at the beautiful Ashdown Park Hotel, and enjoying lunch with Robin before an evening celebrating 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh with the wonderful Gyles Brandreth.

Looking out across the grounds, my eye was drawn to a magnificent old tree, its autumn leaves turning the most beautiful shades of amber and gold.

I had an idea.

I gathered a few fallen leaves, carefully brought them home and pressed them between the pages of a book.

There was something rather lovely about bringing a little piece of Ashdown Forest home with me - the very landscape that inspired A. A. Milne’s Hundred Acre Wood.

Once dried, I added my little signature illustration and spent a thoroughly happy afternoon decorating each leaf by hand, tracing delicate veins with fine gold paint and adding tiny gilded details.

No two leaves are quite alike.

These little treasures will now find their way into some of the presentation boxes of my signed, limited-edition copies of 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough.

A leaf from the forest, a little pot of gold, a drawing and a few quiet hours of making something beautiful.

Because, as I’ve come to know, the little things really do matter.

There’s a little surprise or 3 waiting for you at www.scatterpress.com. Small pleasures! What did you find? by @scatterpress

Can anyone really own a bear? 🧸 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

A hundred years after Winnie the Pooh first appeared in print, a rather curious disagreement has emerged over where Christopher Robin’s original toys should live.

@gylesbrandreth has been championing their return from New York to Britain for a visit, while New Yorkers seem understandably reluctant to part with their much loved residents. Queen Camilla visited with a newly crafted Roo to complete the collection of ‘Others’.

It is a question I explore in Chapter 13 of my book, 100 Years of Pooh.

“A story can therefore belong inwardly to many people at once without being divided between them.”

These five rather worn and wonderful companions have travelled far beyond the nursery in which their adventures began. A century later, they remain part of the childhood memories of millions.

As I wrote:

“This is why stories resist possession. By the time a story has entered experience and understanding, it has become part of the way a person sees the world.”

Perhaps there is something rather lovely about the disagreement itself. The original bear may reside behind glass in New York, but the Pooh we each remember has travelled much further, settling quietly into childhoods, memories and imaginations across the world.

That brings me back to the question I leave with readers at the end of the chapter:

“Can anyone really own a bear?”

Perhaps that is the extraordinary thing about Pooh. Wherever the original bear sits, a little of him belongs to each of us.
