Introducing the inaugural class of the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program!

This week, 28 students marked an important step in their training at a special ceremony, where they recited a professional oath and received stethoscopes to serve as reminders of compassionate, patient-centred care.

“The stethoscope is a relatively simple instrument, but I believe it is one of the most powerful symbols in medicine. It requires you to listen. Not just to heartbeats or breath sounds, but to the human story behind every patient you care for,” said Dr. John Yoo, dean of #SchulichMedDent.

Working alongside supervising physicians, physician assistants support patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment across a range of specialties and clinical settings.

Launched earlier this year, the two-year master’s program aims to strengthen Ontario’s health-care workforce and improve access to care.

Edith Otalike’s career has taken her from pharmacy practice in Nigeria to doctoral research at #SchulichMedDent, driven by a curiosity about how evidence informs health-care decisions.

Her path to earning a PhD also meant making difficult sacrifices, including time away from her family. As she graduates from #WesternU, Edith reflects on her journey and what comes next.

Today, they own and operate @kidsdentalgroup, with four paediatric dentistry and orthodontic clinics across the GTA.

“Those four years pushed us to grow up, shaped our values and gave us the chance to build the friendship that became the foundation of our practice.” 🦷 💜

“Our goal is to give students a space to be artistic while also giving books to children that reflect their diverse experiences and journeys in life.”

When Nadith Ranasinghe immigrated to Canada with his family in 2012, he rarely found books with characters who reflected him or his experiences.

He founded @Kids.health.shelf, a student-led initiative that creates children’s books reflecting diverse life experiences while making health-related topics more accessible to young readers.

Their first book, published in 2024, was The Girl Under the Rambutan Tree. It drew on the childhood memories of Nadith’s mother, Deepika, who grew up in Sri Lanka.

Another book they published, Microville: The Tiny Town Where Everyone Belongs, was written and illustrated by Bahareh Rahimi Shahmirzadi. It builds on Bahareh's experience as a picky eater and introduces children to the gut microbiome and healthy eating.

In November, the team will be donating their fourth book, Arjun and The Championship Sigh, to children in Guyana.
