“Between the living and the gone”

Who is the lucky one?
The one still living -
dragging through memory,
coping with the weight of every day?
Or the one who slipped away too soon,
escaping the misery of this world?

Is he at peace?
Perhaps, yes.
And yet, they call me lucky -
because I am still alive.

But what is luck,
when after five long years,
his name is spoken
and it still splits me in two?

When my parents fight
and I stand alone,
the only one left to mend their storms?
When distance keeps me
from watching over them,
though my heart never leaves home?

When the festival of brothers and sisters
arrives -twice each year
and the world posts smiling pictures,
while I scroll through shadows?

Tell me,
when does survivor’s guilt loosen its grip?

Every time tears come,
why do they always find their way
back to him -
my brother, gone?

Is it because no sorrow
will ever eclipse this one?
Or because I keep carving
the wound deeper,
calling myself victim,
when all I want
