Helping students succeed often means addressing challenges that extend beyond the classroom. Reynolds Middle School social worker Lakeesha Bair-Myers has built her career around that understanding, working with students and families to make sure they have the support they need.

Her dedication to advocating for others earned her recognition as one of @ywcalancaster’s 2026 Women of Achievement.

Lakeesha received the award during the organization’s 10th annual Women of Achievement celebration on Oct. 29 at the Lancaster County Convention Center, joining four other women recognized for their contributions to Lancaster County.

During the ceremony, Lakeesha reflected on the importance of representation, particularly for people whose voices have historically been overlooked. She spoke about creating opportunities for others to participate in spaces where they have not always felt welcome and encouraging them to recognize that they belong.

Lakeesha hopes to be remembered for the people she has helped rather than the positions she has held. That perspective continues to guide her work with students and families today.

Join us in congratulating and thanking her for all that she has done and continues to do for our community!

Having the tools to communicate helps students share what they know and take part in classroom learning. Troia Butcher is helping make those opportunities more accessible for nonspeaking students across the School District of Lancaster.

“Troia has been an invaluable resource for the special education department navigating alternate modalities of communication for our complex learners,” her nominator shared. “Troia has gone above and beyond to make sure our nonspeaking students have access to communication devices and apps as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

For a nonspeaking student, access to a communication device can mean being able to contribute to a class discussion or let a teacher know when they need help. These tools can also support everyday conversations with classmates and give students more opportunities to express their ideas and make their own choices.

Troia’s attention to getting those resources into students’ hands helps educators support communication throughout the school day. Her work makes a difference in students’ opportunities to participate and connect with the people around them.

Thank you, Troia, for helping ensure our students have what they need to learn and grow!

Elementary students from across the School District of Lancaster had a chance to experience math outside the classroom as they gathered with their families for an evening of activities designed to make solving problems fun.

The district hosted its annual Math Fair on Oct. 28 at Wickersham Elementary School in partnership with Mathematics Educators at Millersville University (MEMU), a student organization made up of aspiring teachers.

Millersville students guided children through activities that encouraged them to explore mathematical concepts in a more relaxed setting. Families joined in, giving parents an opportunity to see their children work through challenges and discover what they could accomplish.

The partnership between the district and Millersville University dates back at least 10 years, according to Erin Moss, professor of mathematics education at Millersville. The Math Fair is an annual opportunity for MEMU members to connect with Lancaster students and put their enthusiasm for teaching into practice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Before there was a mural, there were questions. What does unity mean to you? What languages do you speak? What parts of your culture would you want represented?

Students in Alex Aronson’s fourth-grade class at Wickersham Elementary School took those questions into classrooms and around Lancaster. The answers helped shape a mural that reflects their school community.

With support from the Lancaster Education Foundation and @lancfound, artist Adam Serrano painted the mural using the students’ ideas, with one word at its center. Unity.

Have questions about the proposed changes to SDoL schools? The School District of Lancaster is inviting families and community members to participate in conversations about its updated facilities recommendations. The gatherings provide opportunities to meet with district leaders, ask questions and offer feedback about proposed school changes and the district’s longer-term planning.

The updated proposal includes closing Price Elementary for 2027–28, opening a consolidated elementary school in 2029–30 and converting Elizabeth R. Martin to a middle school as Wheatland closes in 2029–30. These changes remain recommendations, subject to applicable Board decisions and further planning.

On Saturday, October 24, the McCaskey community gathered at @mccaskeyhighschool for a tree planting celebration honoring the life and legacy of Brother Frank Albrecht, a longtime educator and mentor whose dedication to students continues to inspire efforts across the School District of Lancaster.

Organized in partnership with @letsgooutdoors123, the event brought volunteers together to plant native trees and shrubs along McCaskey Avenue and Grofftown Run. With a goal of planting more than 200 trees, the project continues efforts to expand green spaces across campus while creating a lasting tribute to someone who devoted more than 30 years to supporting McCaskey students.

The trees planted across McCaskey High School will continue growing long after the students and volunteers who planted them have moved on. Their shade will eventually reach students who never knew Brother Frank, extending his influence in a way his family and the McCaskey community can see for years to come.
