POSTS STORIES REELS

I’m in the US for a month, the first 12 days in Colorado Springs with Tennbo visiting my father. We’ll be on our way to Chicago on Tuesday, then on my own to DC for a few days and finishing in New York for the final week.

I’m shooting slowly, collecting images, mostly of trees and skies.

This post is a darkroom print from Sedona, Arizona, 2009. I think it was taken on my 34th birthday but hey, that was a long time ago and I might be just romanticizing the picture. I do remember hiking that day and being turned around in one of the area’s famous vortexes. by @seanlotman

Happy Father’s Day to all the pops out there. It’s not always easy, especially when kids are entering their tween years, but I’m always happy to be a dad and I’m enjoying the new changes every year. Learning and teaching, teaching and learning, you and me, me and you, the cycle goes on and on.... by @seanlotman

I am delighted to announce that opening today is a three-week show of Tennbo’s drawings and photographs will be on view at the beautiful space upstairs at @farmoon_kyoto run by our dear friend, @masayofunakoshi.

The exhibition is titled “A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Kid” and on the walls will be about 60 of his drawings from ages 5-10, as well as most of his sketchbooks from this era, totalling about 1800 drawings in total.

Our collaboration in Fuji Instax Polaroids will also be on display, as well as a series of spoken word “poems” he made about his monsters when he was aged 5 that I dutifully recorded on my 1937 Remington typewriter. The board game Tennbo created, Dragon Wars, will be available for play as well.

The exhibition is designed to express the range and depth of childhood imagination, providing for visitors a flight of fancy into a strange and wonderful place, a detour of immersion that might catalyze wonder and nostalgia.

The gallery is available for viewing on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11AM to 5PM and will run for three weeks. Today I will be at the show in the afternoon, and tomorrow and Sunday will be joined by Ariko and Tennbo. I will be updating regularly here details about the exhibition and when we’ll be there. We hope to see you at Far Moon soon. by @seanlotman

A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Kid

5/1 to 5/17 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday
11:00 - 17:00 at Farmoon

This exhibition features the art of my son, Tennbo, between the ages of five and eleven. There are
twenty books containing more than 1800 drawings, revealing shifting impressions and influences:
dozens of trips to the zoo, soccer, baseball fandom, classic Godzilla movies, Marvel Comics, manga,
music, animation, and American cartoon strips like The Far Side. Sometimes a theme is developed—
there is one book the entirety of which involves a single window where sometimes the view is
mundane and other occurrences involve the cosmic. Many drawings have a typical everyday quality but
many more have a surrealistic flourish most adult artists strive to rediscover within themselves. Some
of the drawings are being featured on the walls of this space. They have been organized into categories
based on unique qualities, including portraits and sports, among others.
In addition to these drawings are hundreds of photographs made by Tennbo and myself with a Fuji
Instax camera between 2020 and 2024.

All we can hope
for now is that this show reminds you of the playtime you enjoyed as a child, the drawings and
photographs bridging for you the past and present, the world as it is and the world you once invented for yourself.

So the big news is we’re closing our color darkroom studio. We had to let go of it because new owners are taking charge of the building’s land. Growing up I never ever EVER thought I would find my calling in color printing in the darkroom, but life is a funny thing, eh? I’d been beginning to take pictures a bit seriously when in the spring of 2013, at a moment of confusion and crossroads, Ariko (who built the darkroom next to her family soba restaurant in 2008) recommended I try printing. The learning curve was surprisingly short and I soon became obsessed with the process. I’ve thousands of hours in this little space, fumbling in the dark, splitting hairs on the tiniest tint of magenta or blue, sighing with resignation when I missed a burn spot in a difficult print requiring multiple exposures— everything can be perfect but one spot and it means doing it all over again and again and again. And again (honor that little voice in your head that professes excellence). I’ve come to truly love the chemistry of color printing, how the whole thing works, and am honored to be laboring and striving in a practice that goes back to photography’s origins and is only practiced today regularly by a few thousand people at most on all of Earth. I really don’t think I’d still be taking photographs with as much ardor as I do now without knowing I can make something fantastical happen in the darkroom. It is my happy place and it is my salvation.

Two days ago, Wednesday, was the last printing session. I did a few prints for four ongoing projects. The very last print I made there was a photogram of my dog and a leaf that I might or might not use for a book being made in the autumn. That’s the thing with printing, mystery! And lighting up the darkness...

This isn’t the end of course. Hopefully Ariko and I will find a new studio to build our next darkroom soon.

This season @lomography was kind enough to send me their Square Instax LISQ for Tennbo and myself to play with. Lots of untapped dreaminess in this machine.

I answered some questions about instant photography and Puking Rainbows Past and Future on their website. Link is in my bio. by @seanlotman
