Our crews are called @seattlehousemafia and @dillydisco (with the one and only @_mixedupmike_ who joined us in the studio that day), but at the heart of it, we're just DJs united by a genuine love for the music, the positive energy of the culture, and the people who make it special.

This is a recreation of my vinyl set from Disco Sucks in September. I didn't record the set that night, but loved where it went, so I wanted to get back behind the decks and capture it.

First off, I don't believe that only “real DJs” play vinyl, or that you have to learn on vinyl to be a great DJ. But I do believe learning to play records teaches you things that are difficult to replicate any other way.

There are no beat grids, cue points, loops, or audio normalization. You're working with the record that's physically in front of you, and if you miss your opportunity, you miss your opportunity.

Many records, especially older pressings, aren't quantized and leave you asking, “Is this track good enough to have to chase the mix and potentially sound sloppy?” For us music lovers, and for the dance floor, the answer is usually yes. It's worth the risk.

Then there are all the other variables: shit needles, dust, skips and scratches, cue burn, inconsistent pressings, 1200s in desperate need of a tune-up, questionable monitor setups, somebody bumping the table, or, God forbid, catching your own sleeve on a tonearm (ask me how I know).

Records are expensive, they're heavy, and you can only bring so many. Before you ever start playing, you've already made decisions about the night, the crowd, the vibe. Sometimes you completely miss. Other times it's a fucking bullseye.

Within those limitations, you still have to mix, choose the right record at the right moment, read the room, and turn a finite collection of music into something that hopefully feels limitless.

And vinyl is inconsistent. You can prepare for everything and still have a bad set. Or you can walk in nervous and unprepared and somehow play one of those sets where everything disappears and instinct takes over. You listen back later and almost can't believe it was you.

There's something visceral and primitive about playing records that's tough to put your finger on. The DJ feels it, and if done right, the dance floor feels it too.

For those who love vinyl, you already get it.

Supreme sat Riz down and told him the truth about the first time he heard him play at Rebar: he'd heard the hype, he showed up, and he couldn't work out why anyone bothered. Then someone dragged him back a couple of months later, and the whole thing clicked.

Riz on request culture, phones in the booth, and the young woman at Monkey Loft who learned the hard way. His answer was simple: nobody who DJs in this club takes requests, and you'll get it eventually.
