The best birthday present we both received this year is our baby girl.

Happy birthday to the most amazing husband and father, @jsensenbro! He is the calm, sensible, on-time, financial conscious, strength, diaper changing, and swaddling machine of this family.

And yes, the news we have been holding off and the biggest change to the homestead was adding a new member to the family! We waited over 6 years to welcome our long prayed for miracle baby girl Odette at the beginning of this month 💖 by @sensiblehomestead

When you homestead, you will have loses. Learn from it and move on.

I don't think I'll use manual incubators anymore. I am going to stick to my automatic incubators for now.

PSA:
Free Mosquito Fish

Check out your local Vector Control Programs

Why you should use this resource:

1. Your tax dollars pays for this.
2. Chemical-free method to control mosquito population.
3. Mosquito Fish are hardy and adaptable.
4. Self-regulating & low maintenance.

How it works:

1. Call first to check locations that offers the free mosquito fish.
2. Go and ask for the free mosquito fish, they are supposed to give you 5, but most places will give you more.
3. Bring it home and put it into your pond.

With all of the wet weather everywhere, check for standing water because mosquitos only need a cap full of water to start breeding! Did you know a single adult mosquitofish can consume anywhere from 100 to 500 mosquito larvae per day.

We have several ponds on our property, so instead of going to the locations, I called the program directly and they delivered it directly to our home!

Last weekend, I had the awesome opportunity to go to @bakercreekseeds Heirloom Seed Festival in Mansfield, Missouri with Baby O. It was such an amazing experience that I plan on traveling to every year for the connections and shared knowledge! We were able to meet up with friends that moved away. We were able to make new friends from all over the States. We were able to connect with people from all background with the shared love of gardening/homesteading.

Going to this festival reminded me how important it is for all of us to grow our own food, connect with our community and protect the collective knowledge of being self-sufficient! And being self-sufficient doesn't mean we have to do this alone, but knowing we can. It is so important to work together.

I am energized even more to building Sensenbaugh Homestead (yes, we are still Sensible Homestead) to be a place for people in my community to gather, love and learn. I am not an expert in all I do, but I promise you that I am passionate about it.

As soon as we finish repairing things on the homestead, we will be opening the farmstand and the homestead to the community.

Wanna know something about duck eggs?

The one on the right is a normal duck egg.

The one on the left is a duck egg, but it is called a fairy egg, wind egg or fart egg. These names make me laugh!.

If you are new to raising egg poultry, this is totally fine. Possible reasons why this happen:

Reproductive Glitch: A tiny egg happens when a piece of tissue or a normal hormonal signal tricks the reproductive system into forming a shell and albumen (egg white) without a yolk ever being released.

Young Ducks: Immature female ducks just starting their laying cycle often produce unusually tiny or "funky" eggs while their bodies regulate the laying process.

Stress or Disturbance: Sudden environmental stress, loud noises, or predator scares can disrupt a mature duck's laying cycle and result in a miniature egg.

It is totally edible!

Happy homesteading!

Raw unfiltered video of making homemade fish sauce with my mom!

We are using fresh Sardines, but you can use Anchovies or Mackerels too! Support your local fishermens! These came from @michealshaw and Ryan with @luciabarracuda_com_fishing at the @vistafarmersmarket_92081

This is my first time making it with my mom's guidance.

Instead of using the whole fish, we are just using the heads and tails because mom wanted to eat the fish.

But you can use the whole fish!Mix your fish in some of the salt.

Then start layering salted fish and salt.

Weigh your fish and add 20-30% of the total fish weight in Salt.

For an example, we had:

21oz of fish
7oz of sea salt (additives-free)

Make sure to save enough salt to cover the fish. Salt should be the last layer

Seal it tight and store it somewhere warm.

Time it takes to ferment depends on temperature.

Keep you all posted!

Save this and follow our journey:)

Share this with someone that loves fish sauce!

I have been wanting to add some type of black soldier fly bin to the homestead and I finally got around to it. I wanted to create something that was somewhat all enclosed and wasn't super bulky. And I was too frugal to buy those fancy one.

I'll post more about this if I have any success!

A huge reason why I wanted to add this once I knew I wanted to add more animals on the homestead is because black soldier flies helps you quickly turn food waste into rich garden fertilizer and grow free, high-protein food for our animals like our ducks!

Just one more step to being more self-reliant and less reliant on commerical feed.

NKF (Natural Korean Farming) Fish Amino Acid Part 3

If you have a garden, this is for you! Easy game changer to a crazy robust garden and saves you money!

Ingredients: equal parts in weight
1 part fish (any and all parts)
1 part brown sugar

Directions:
Layer 1 part fish,
Then 1 part brown sugar,
Repeat until you are ending with sugar as the last layer. This will help with the smell.

Time frame:
Let it ferment in a bucket/ barrel with a lid for 3 to 6 months (I waited for 6 months).

Then you filter the liquid for dilute and water your plants.

Bury the fish parts that didn't break down. Bury it deep and cover with something heavy or you'll get visitors digging up your garden!

Save and share with other gardeners!

A little photo dump of our first time in Yosemite as a family. We are lucky enough to be invited by our best friend's family annual Yosemite trip! This will definitely not be our last! Thanks @cassbernas and @greblhad!

Baby O learning to throw signs.

Gotta say we have the craziest qathletic friends, @greblhad and @cassbernas did the 10+ mile hike around the Panorama Trails with us and then did a marathon fun run two days later.

Shout out to @jsensenbro for carrying Baby O 99% of the hike.

How can we not come back every year?!

I mean seirously?!

Enjoy 😉

Happy Father's Day!

I may be a day late on posting this, but lets be real @jsensenbro is never on insta to even see this and I dont even think my dad would either.

Either way, these two deserves some recognition for dealing with two strong independent people :) by @sensiblehomestead
