Welcome to ShafferHoops!

I’ve spent the last 10 years giving everything I have to the game I love, and basketball has given me so much in return.

I started ShafferHoops to share my passion for the game, help players maximize their potential, and pass along the lessons basketball has taught me about life.

Swipe to learn more about me, my background, and what ShafferHoops is all about ➡️

I am a former college basketball player.

During my college career, I was fortunate enough to win both regular-season and conference tournament championships, earn First Team All-GAC Tournament honors, and leave my college as a record holder.

After college, I made the decision not to pursue a professional playing career because of my injury history and the calling I felt toward coaching, teaching, and training the next generation of players.

I spent 5 years working under professional basketball trainer Jason Otter and teaching the OtterBasketball system.

Over those years, I had the opportunity to learn the details of skill development, movement, footwork, shooting, and how to actually TEACH the game to players.

Jason has worked with and helped develop players at every level of the game, and in my eyes, he is the G.O.A.T. of the basketball training business.

He taught me so much of what I know today, and his influence plays a huge role in the way I train and develop players.

When you work with me, you won’t be flipping and sliding cones across the floor just to make a workout look difficult.

Everything we do will have a PURPOSE and be designed to translate directly to the game.

We will focus on skill development including ball handling, passing, finishing, shooting and shot construction, footwork, making reads not moves, rerouting movement tracks, creating angles, and more.

I’m a huge believer in breakdown checkpoint progressions—breaking skills and movements down piece by piece to build consistent movement patterns and shooting mechanics.

If you want to become great at something, discipline is the key. I expect the players I work with to be disciplined not only during our workouts, but in the work they put in when nobody is watching.

Learning to take angles is one of the fastest ways to become a better player! If you struggle to go past defenders, this is probably why.

Creating EXTRA space is easy once you learn to keep the ball spinning in your hand! As long as your hand isn’t underneath the ball, you don’t touch it with your other hand, and the ball is still spinning, YOU CAN TAKE AS MANY STEPS AS YOU WANT.

Working on drift shooting reads with @janaejohnson13

The drift dribble is one of the most effective dribbles in basketball. It creates more ball in hand time for you to read the defense and make a decision.

1. If you drift and the defense backs up, Hesi pull.
2. If you drift and the defense stays up, Attack!

Every player wants to be SHIFTY, but very few know how to work on it! Here’s how ⬇️

1. Change your footwork to a 1, 2 step
2. Develop good ball control
3. Sell angles with your eyes and body
4. Come to a Shafferhoops session / or an Otter Basketball camp near you!

REAL WORK with Clay Blair

I started working with Clay last year as a senior in high school. Since then, he has bounced back from injury and taken his game to the next level through consistent, REAL work.

He is now a freshman PG at Arkansas Tech University, and I can’t wait to see what all he’s able to accomplish is his bright basketball future! by @shafferhoops

One thing all ELITE guards have is a good CHANGE OF PACE. As @otterbasketball would say, make your slow slower and your fast faster!

Progressive shooting is THE BEST way to build your shot. If you’re not breaking your shot down in your workouts, you’re not doing it right!

Being a great shooter takes DISCIPLINE and CONSISTENCY.

Brandon Wright is prime example of what that looks like! He went from being a below average shooter, to a high level shooter in just a year. There’s no shortcuts, he made it happen through consistent, disciplined work!
