We have to stop discounting each other. And we don’t mean financially. Emotionally….

Every few weeks, a stylist posts their prices or work and the comments fill up with “that’s not worth it.” It echoes from people who have never and may never been in their chair, telling them what their skill is worth.

Price is only part of the whole. Value is the other part. Every person values services and items different and we should try to agree that there is truth in that. We hear so many complaints about salons not showing up on time, running hours behind, ignoring messages, and arguing with clients who don’t love their style. That’s not the standard we want for our industry, and black salon are notorious for some of these behaviors.

These are just a few of the ways we add value for our clients at Shag Noir:

✦ Showing up on time and running on time
✦ Responding to our clients
✦ Having real systems in our salon
✦ Keeping a clean, organized space
✦ Having emotionally intelligent conversations when a client is unhappy or confused

We opened in East Austin in March 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 as a curly and textured hair salon with hourly, no-tip pricing, living wages, low-toxic products, Green Circle certification, and Pay What You Can days and in house education.

Under a proposed federal rule, students at about 𝟗𝟐% of beauty programs could lose federal aid because the data says this career doesn’t pay. That data comes from what we charge and report.

Stylists: know the value you bring. Your return should reflect the effort you pour into your craft and this industry. Report what you earn, and defend each other.

Clients: if it’s out of reach, save up or book within your budget. Just don’t tear a stylist down because of scarcity mindset.

And to my Black community especially: we are all we have. When you see someone in our community doing the hard work and growing, see yourself in it. Their success is a reflection of what’s possible for all of us, not a reason to degrade.

With Love- Respectfully 🖤

Y’ALL. Meet DePaul. 🔥 @depaulwahl

This man is carrying a legacy — his momma, Rosalyn, was an Austin hairstyling legend, an extraordinaire, the real deal for years. And now her son is stepping into the game — 11 months fresh out of school and already going the distance.

He’s not just here for curls, coils, and kinks (though yes, all of that too) — he’s training to master and create texture on hair that isn’t naturally curly at all. That’s next-level artistry. Im stoked knowing there’s a curiosity in young stylists wanting to become fluent in every tool, every texture, every landscape of hair there is.

This is what it means to be an artisan in this industry. 💈

You tell me… How would you feel knowing you could solve equations on any head of hair? 👇
