11 years playing basketball from high school to Europe has been one of my biggest challenge. by @shaq_maddog25

Behind the process: Shaq’s return to the court – 13 weeks after a complete plantar fascia rupture 🏀

On November 5th, in our FIBA Europe Cup game against Anorthosis Famagusta, @shaq_maddog25 sustained a complete rupture of the plantar fascia in his right foot. For every basketball player, this is a severe injury.

After discussions within the medical team, reviewing the literature, and sparring with professionals in our network, we decided on 6 weeks in a boot - more than we initially anticipated. What in best case was a 3-month timeline could suddenly extend to 6 months, potentially season-ending.

When a player gets injured - especially in a non-contact situation - I feel a responsibility. Simply put; injury happens when load exceeds capacity. My job is to build and maintain that capacity over a long season, so it was a frustrating feeling.

As a team, we reviewed everything: video, footwear, court surface, taping, travel load, and work–recovery balance. Despite no prior medical history of this injury within the club, this is a process of learning and adapting for the future.

13 weeks later
Rehab has progressed better than we hoped. Shaq is back on court participating in team drills and has made significant physical improvements. Credit to Shaq. His professionalism and consistency have been exceptional.

He has made substantial improvements in general strength, muscle mass, and bilateral jumping performance. However, the data still shows a reactive strength asymmetry of ~10% between right and left foot. This is not surprising as explosive and elastic qualities are typically the final piece in return-to-play progression.

Physically, Shaq is now in a position to increase team practice exposure, while we still bridge the final reactive strength gap. The exact return-to-game timeline depends on multiple factors - not only physical readiness, but also psychological confidence and tactical integration. Certainly, we are not far off.

And what to take home from this story? Rehab is not just about returning - it is about improving where you can. And you can make a difference!
