Excited to have presented at the AIA Florida Convention today!
I had the opportunity to present “#Digital #Twins for Disaster/Hazard #Prevention,” discussing how #AI-powered Digital Twins are transforming resilience in architecture and the built environment. We explored how predictive models, real-time data, and #human-centered AI can help architects make more informed decisions amid increasing climate risks.
It was also especially rewarding to see our FLUID fourth-year undergraduate design studio exhibited at the convention. Developed in collaboration with @monkstudio.ufsoa the studio challenged students to rethink Florida’s waterfronts through AI-assisted design, computational methods, material experimentation, and nature-based resilience strategies. The exhibition showcased student proposals for Jacksonville’s Betz Tiger Point Preserve that integrated AI analysis, computational design, and environmental performance into resilient architectural solutions.
Many thanks to @stephen.bender for the invitation and to @aia_florida for creating a venue where research, education, and professional practice come together. I also appreciate everyone who attended the session and visited the exhibition, the conversations and questions highlighted the growing role of AI and Digital Twins in shaping the future of resilient design.

Shared Lab was honored to be part of Inteligencias at @wdcdmxgnp 2025, hosted at @manufacturamx / @lagunamx, alongside @digitalbuildingtechnologies from @ethzurich.

This week, I attended the AI for Engineering/ID4 meeting at Princeton. During my presentation, I shared our work on #World #Models and #Digital #Twins, and collaboration with Lazlo Bleker @pierluigidak @kaleb7589 and @tkmmark on #Generative Graph-Based Structural Form-Finding. I also met with Caitlin Mueller and Sigrid Adriaenssens to discuss future research on human-in-the-loop AI and amiable design. taken in Princeton University by @karlasaldanao

This is how we experienced our Oystercrete Workshop, in collaboration with @fluidityd7 / @ufarchitecture / @uflorida, creating cast 3D printing pieces using our concrete made from oyster shells. 🦪

The shells were generously donated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in St. Augustine, Florida, USA. 🇺🇸

Oysters as Material? 🦪
This is how we became circular during our second workshop in the US at @uflorida / @fluidityd7 🐊.

Oysters play a crucial role in the environment—they filter water, protect coastlines, and support marine ecosystems. Yet in Florida, oyster populations are rapidly disappearing, and discarded shells often end up as waste instead of being reintegrated into sustainable cycles. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, oyster reefs have declined significantly in recent decades due to overharvesting, habitat loss, and climate-related impacts.

For this workshop, we obtained the oyster-shell residue with full permission from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, sourced directly from the GTM Research Reserve in St. Augustine, Florida.

With this material, we were invited to the University of Florida to teach a workshop where students learned how to crush, process, and develop a biocomposite mixture using oyster-shell waste and organic minerals. Students then cast this material into molds produced through 3D printing.

This project is ongoing, and we will continue developing it through 2026.

Some days ago I participated at @wdcdmxgnp 2025, in the panel called “Humanizing Technology.”

My talk was about ancestral and artificial intelligence — how the old and the new can come together to shape collaborative creation.

I got to share the stage with some amazing minds: Dr. Benjamin Dillenburger from @digitalbuildingtechnologies @ethzurich, @dinorahmschulte from @manufacturamx , and Pedro Salazar — all doing incredible work in tech, 3D printing, innovation, and AI.

Huge thanks to @joannaruizg and @ricardocitrico for creating this space where design and tech meet the human.
And to everyone who came, listened, and asked the big question with us: What can design do?

On Friday, January 17, we gathered at Café Resistance Bookstore and Coffee Shop to explore the possibilities of transforming the Ribault River area into a model of resilience and community vitality. The event, co-hosted by @sjriverkeeper, LISC Jacksonville, and @ufarchitecture was a success!

We presented plans to revitalize the Gold Merit and Pope Place incinerator ash sites into safe, sustainable, and accessible public spaces.

Attendees were inspired by the solutions that reimagined contaminated waterfronts as vibrant community assets.

This event was part of the Resilient Ribault Project, a collaborative initiative dedicated to addressing quality of life issues and fostering healthier neighborhoods and waterways.

A huge thank you to all who attended and contributed to this important conversation. Together, we are turning challenges into opportunities and building a brighter future for Jacksonville!

Playing Models is an annual symposium series focused on #AI, #Architecture, and #Storytelling. Launched in 2022 as a collaboration between the @ufarchitecture at @uflorida and the Chair of Digital Architectonics at #ethzurich, it has now completed its third cycle. The symposium aims to develop a platform for discussing the #mathematical and #philosophical shifts emerging with the spread of AI in its various forms.
