Looking forward to see my student work for the final review of my graduate studio, scheduled on December 2nd.
Studio Theme: Towards Performative AI: Fine-Tuning AI Models to Learn Ecological Design Principles

Dr. Shermeen Yousif, Associate Professor, School of Architecture
University of Texas, Arlington
ARCH 5671 | Fall 2025

Studio Brief:
In this advanced architectural design studio, students interrogated the intersections of generative artificial intelligence and ecological resilience, situating AI not merely as a form generator but as a critical epistemic tool for decoding, internalizing, and amplifying ecological intelligence in the design process. Towards Performative AI reframes the role of computational design within an imperative of environmental responsibility. The studio challenges prevailing biases encoded within dominant generative models, particularly diffusion-based systems, by foregrounding passive environmental strategies often marginalized within datasets of canonical architectural representations. Drawing on a wide corpus of vernacular and ecological design precedents, students explored how AI can be fine-tuned to internalize and reinterpret the embedded logic of ecological responsiveness. The studio’s theoretical inquiry situates this work within broader discourses of architectural epistemology, posthuman intelligence, and climate-responsive design.
Stay tuned, more work is coming.

It was an honor and a great experience to host Sue Ann Kahn, Louis Kahn’s daughter… @louiskahnarchitect at the school of architecture at UTA @uta_soa. She gave a great lecture on the Last Notebook, her book on the last notebook of Louis Kahn. #louiskahn #architecture #architect #architecturephotography #architecturelovers @utacappa @utarlington @aiadallas @aiafortworth @txarchitects @aiasxuta @nomasxuta @campxuta @dfrancosc00 by @shermeenyousif

Last week I presented my paper "Toward Latent Intent Orchestration: Fine-Tuning as Architectural Operation in Multimodal AI Workflows" at the ACADIA 2026 conference in Detroit, @acadiaorg.

ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) is one of the most prestigious venues in computational design research, with an acceptance rate of 30% for this conference.

The paper introduces Latent Intent Orchestration (LIO): a framework for keeping design intent intact across diffusion models, LLMs and simulation, by calibrating AI workflows at four levels: dataset, prompt, workflow and cross-modal.

The key finding: design coherence doesn't come from more powerful models. It comes from how designers orchestrate them. Fine-tuning isn't a technical setting; it's an architectural act of authorship.

This research grew out of my studios at UT Arlington, and I'm so proud of the students whose work shaped it.

Thank you Dr. David Franco @dfrancosc00, Director of the School of Architecture, UTA, for your support.

Thank you @sinamostafavi and @karlasaldanao for the photos.

I am honored and humbled to be elected to the ACADIA Board of Directors 2027-2028.
Thanks to the great ACADIA BoD and organization. ACADIA has become home to me, a great community with amazing scholars pushing boundaries and thriving to develop the design computation project in architecture. Thank you @acadiaorg @ltu_coad for an amazing ACADIA 2026 conference. My friends at LTU @saracodarin @huangleesu @masataka.yoshikawa @ttistengteng @qthai did excellent. Thanks to ACADIA president @biaynabogosian and all ACADIA BoD. Thanks to Luis Pacheco for the photo. #acadiaconf #acadiaorg #architecture #architect #archilovers.
