One year on, and the pain of losing Sommie still feels impossible to put into words. 💔

She started She Takes Up Space because she believed deeply in girls and young women feeling seen, heard, confident and able to use their voice.

Although our pain is unbearable, we now have the privilege of continuing what she started. As much as we grieve her loss, we are also so deeply thankful for her life. Thankful for the love she gave, the light she brought into every room, the lives she touched and the vision she left behind. We will always be grateful that we got to know, love and be loved by her.

Our first Opportunity Day with @lisacademyng was incredibly special to us. Seeing the girls speak up, ask questions, grow in confidence and think bigger about what is possible for them felt like a beautiful reflection of the work Sommie wanted to do.

We are so grateful to @lisacademyng for opening their doors and being part of something that means so much to us.

One year without her, we miss her beyond words. But we will keep showing up, keep building and keep carrying her work forward. 🩷

For Sommie, always.

Saturday 19th September 2026 🩷 It happened.

Our very first Opportunity Day for the girls at @lisacademyng, created to encourage, empower and remind them of the power they already hold.

From our introductory session and panel discussion, to the girls asking questions, sharing their thoughts and pledging to take up more space, this marked the beginning of something really special.

As we continue to keep Sommie Maduagwu’s legacy alive, we hope to create more opportunities, reach more girls and keep building from here.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped bring our first Opportunity Day to life.

She is already a leader. She takes up space. 🩷

We’re so excited for what’s next for She Takes Up Space 👑

We want to create more opportunities for girls and young women at different stages of their journey to build their confidence, use their voice, see themselves represented and feel like they belong in every room they walk into.

And we’ve got something exciting this Saturday ✨ by @shetakesupspacehq

A reminder of the mission 💕

She Takes Up Space brings women from every field into spaces where girls and young women are learning, growing, and piloting their paths. We want to them how wide “possible” actually is.

Take up space. Ask the big question. Sit in the front row ✨ by @shetakesupspacehq

This was our Sommie in action - dancing with schoolgirls, spreading joy, living her mission. Electric. Contagious. Unforgettable.

Three months ago, we lost her. Today, she would have turned 30.

Sommie created She Takes Up Space to empower young girls in Nigeria, to show them they belong in every room and every career. She didn’t just talk about it - she showed up. She danced with them, spoke truth to them, made them believe in themselves. Her energy was something you couldn’t ignore, and honestly, we don’t want to.

So today, on her birthday, we’re opening She Takes Up Space HQ.

This is us - her family, her friends, the people who loved her refusing to let her mission die with her. We’re not just going to miss Sommie. We’re going embody her strength. We’re going to keep empowering young women, keep showing up, keep taking up space in her honor.

We’re still organizing, still planning our first initiatives and fundraisers for causes she would have championed herself. But we wanted you to know- we’re doing this.

Updates will come soon.

If you knew Sommie, if her work moved you, or if you simply want to support the next generation of young women in Nigeria - submit your details in the Google Form (link in bio and) Let us know you’re with us.
And if nothing else? Share your love for her in the comments. Tell us your favorite Sommie memory. Remind us why she mattered.
She was everything. Let’s make sure the world remembers.
