Speaking to History: interviewing people from the past by investigating their archives with local AI. What might be in your collection?

POSTS STORIES REELS

If there’s one invitation I always extend my interviewees - it’s to define the terms they use frequently, even if I’m pretty sure I already grasp the meanings.

For instance, I’d ask a fitness pro to explain what “health” or “fitness” means to them personally. Or have a life coach break down how they think about “success” or “work-life balance.”

Rather than just assuming we share the same definitions, getting them to clarify terms in their own language almost always reveals super intriguing perspectives I wouldn’t expect. But it also makes concepts way more understandable for audiences too!

It also shows you’re genuinely interested in THEIR distinct points of view, and that you’re not trying to put them into some predetermined box. I’ve found guests appreciate being able to share meanings they put real thought into shaping.

Have you ever experienced lightbulb moments when someone defined a familiar term in a totally new way?

As with good conversations, good interviews often thrive on the unexpected. One unexpected tactic to try - invite your guest to ask YOU their own question!

Letting the interviewee flip the script and guide dialogue makes your exchange feel less scripted, more organic, and interactional. This momentary role reversal also demonstrates your openness and willingness to reciprocate value as the host.

I expand on how and why you should attempt this interview reciprocity over on my community account. Come check out the full reel at @srd_insider 😊

We’re in the midst of awards season. Have you ever noticed how those acceptance speeches go on and on with thank yous? And for good reason too. Major studio films have 600 crew members on average, and mega productions like Iron Man can go up to a mind-boggling 3,000!

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed doing your content creation solo, it’s because, let’s face it, you’re trying to pull off the work of a small army. So, instead of being too hard on yourself, how about taking a cue from Hollywood’s teamwork playbook?

Think about finding a creative partner to swap scripts, do some co-shooting, and tag-team the editing. Having a collaborator from your peer group can give you way more balanced feedback than that inner critic of yours and keep you on track with consistent creation through mutual accountability.

Having someone in your corner can really make a difference in turning your video dreams into actual reality, so join us over at our community account, @srd_insider, where we’re sharing more tips and advice to kick start your creativity journey.

Should you murmur in agreement with your guest during an interview? We instinctively echo “Mm-hmm” and “Yeah” in everyday conversation. But are these vocal affirmations a smart interview tactic or a distracting filler? I think it depends.

Occasional sounds signaling you’re engaged in the conversation can encourage your guest to keep elaborating.

However, too many murmurs of agreement can clutter the conversation and make it hard for the listener and guest to concentrate.

Learn more about the nuances of vocal affirmations over at our community account @srd_insider. There you’ll find the full reel and many more on the art of the interview.

Have you seen those Instagram Reels where someone’s doing a random task, saying nothing, and it’s supposed to make you curious enough to read the caption? It’s often pitched as an easy way to get on camera for the camera-shy, but little do they know, they’re halfway there. In fact, the missing piece might just be to open their mouth and speak.

Multitasking is usually a no-no if you’re aiming for productivity, but with camera confidence, it can be your secret weapon. Learn how and why in our full reel over at our community account @srd_insider where you’ll also find a complete library of highly practical reels dedicated to camera confidence tips and advice.

Should we pay the people we interview? British Broadcasting legend David Frost famously spent $600,000 to get President Nixon’s Watergate scoop. However, handing over significant checks can raise ethical concerns. So, where should we draw the line on compensation?

That’s what we’re discussing in today’s reel. Catch the full lowdown at our community account, @srd_insider , where you’ll also find a library of reels to help you interview like pros.

In everyday conversation, we don’t think much about our voice. But on camera, it becomes a strategic tool. Actors know this. Bradley Cooper worked with a vocal coach for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week over an extended period to prepare his voice to play Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. That might be too much commitment for you, but what actors understand about their voice, and anyone seeking camera confidence should too, is the value of playing with these three things: volume, pitch, and intonation.

Let’s admit it - interviews can initially feel awkward and forced! As legendary TV host Michael Parkinson noticed, it means establishing “relationship” and rapport when you’re “basically strangers” in an unfamiliar setting. But a bit of candid rapport transforms discomfort.

First, normalize the weirdness! Admit openly, “This feels a bit odd huh?” Laugh together about all the equipment and stiffness of the set-up.

We’re sharing more advice on dealing with interview awkwardness over at our community account @srd_insider. There you’ll find the full reel, plus a full library of interview content!

We’ve been sharing content on this platform for over a year now. Instagram evolves rapidly, and we’ve adapted too. But despite constant changes, our main principle and best advice for you on sharing expertise stays steady: Focus your content around the common questions people keep asking you.

As a beauty pro, that might mean a skin care FAQ. Photographer? Explainers on gear basics. Current affairs expert? Breakdowns of need-to-know news events. Those basics may feel remedial given your specialized knowledge, but great content meets audiences where they currently stand.

There’s a library of reels over at our community account @srd_insider to support your content creation. Join us there!

Steal This Interviewer’s Move - Michael Parkinson, Fred Astaire + Getting Personal as an Interviewer

Often the advice for interviewers is to focus completely on the guest. But Michael Parkinson, the famous British talk show host, rejected this. From Fred Astaire to Madonna to David Beckham, his approach stayed consistent – find some personal common ground.

Parkinson knew candid camaraderie and even playful gaffes could turn an uneasy exchange into an insightful chat. Join us over @srd_insider where we’re diving deeper into the methods that made Parkinson a TV legend.
