We are back home in Goshen after a summer on the highways, playing shows and meeting many of you face-to-face. Those rooms were filled with warmth, and they reminded us why we spent the last twelve and more years writing and sharing songs as Shiny Shiny Black. Now that our summer rush is over, we are returning to the challenge and joy of crafting new music and completing the renovation at our home and studio, Sparklin House. But the reality of independent music today is challenging. Streaming services are convenient, but they do not pay enough to cover the basic costs of making art. And honestly, more of our music gets passed from person to person than found in the digital ocean. So we are building a path powered by people, not algorithms. That is why we created the *Travelers* community on Patreon. It is a place where you can walk alongside us as we write, record, and kick at the darkness. Today we are launching the first day of our fall Patreon member drive. We call this community the Travelers - because we are all navigating the same road together, looking for warmth, connection, and honest art as we go. Our Patreon was born in the era of the Covid pandemic - and while we’ve always had a few stalwart companions to help warm the space, it never really took on the lively energy we first imagined for it when we began. So we begin again. While indie artists have more opportunities for creating and promoting than ever, the economics of thriving as an artist are fractured and undervalued. It’s a confusing domain - as one community friend mentioned to us a few weeks ago, “I realized I think it’s romantic and exciting to hear about the struggle of being an artist (aka thinking they lead a charmed life) but I’m not really thinking about how difficult it would actually be.” The idea behind our patron community is this: we offer beginning access to this community free, like much of our online sharing, but if you want to contribute funds into building our people-powered music machine, you give us a little money every month (or annually!). Paid signups start at $5 a month. In exchange, we give you deeper insights and early versions of our work. Updates on what we’re working on. Special meet up events, and whatever we dream up along the way. But here’s the real reason to support us on Patreon: if our music and contribution is something you value and would like to see continue in the world - we invite you to become a paid supporter. We support and buy from fellow artists on Patreon and beyond. We don’t mainly support them for the perks—although some of them are pretty fun. But bottom line, we want to enjoy, contribute to and affirm the good work they’re doing, because it’s been nourishing to us. We can thank our fellow artist @katiedahlmusic for this member drive idea. She was the first artist we’ve seen launch a member drive, in NPR’s “sustaining member” model fashion. So—just like NPR, we’re having a member drive! A special night in independent music takes place on the Opry stage tonight! We were nominated for the second year in a row for the @josiemusicawards - this time for Folk/Americana Group of the Year! We are honored to be recognized along with so many other independent artists!
