Last night, while exploring the city on foot, I came across something I never expected.

In the middle of a busy road, under the glow of streetlights, I noticed a bird sitting completely still. At first, it was too dark to make out what it was, so I walked closer. To my surprise, it was a Barn Owl.

It wasn't moving, and with vehicles passing by, I was worried it would get run over. As I carefully tried to move it to safety, the owl suddenly took flight but only for a moment. It flew straight toward a man standing beside an autorickshaw, grabbed onto his leg, and the poor guy started screaming. People nearby were startled, wondering where this owl had come from.

The owl then slipped underneath the autorickshaw. I asked everyone to stay calm and requested the driver to move the vehicle slowly. A few moments later, the owl flew to a nearby building site where it finally found a safer place to rest.

From the way it struggled to fly, I suspect it may have been struck by a passing vehicle while hunting or crossing the road.

Moments like these are a reminder that cities are expanding into spaces that once belonged to wildlife. As concrete replaces forests, wetlands, and open fields, animals are forced to navigate roads, traffic, and human activity just to survive. Encounters like this aren't because wildlife is entering our world we've built ours over theirs.

Every wild animal deserves a safe place to live. The least we can do is slow down, stay aware, and choose compassion when their paths cross ours. 🦉

A tiny worker in a field of flowers. 🌼🐝
As the bee searches for nectar using its proboscis, pollen sticks to its fuzzy body and travels to the next bloom. With every visit, it unknowingly helps plants reproduce and keeps ecosystems alive.
A single bee can visit thousands of flowers in a day, proving that even the smallest creatures play the biggest roles in nature.

Cinematography taught me one thing:
Even in darkness, there is always a way to create light.

K A V A D I: A Power Greater Than Yourself

Every April, the Kodavas of Kavadi and surrounding villages gather to celebrate their beloved Goddess Bhagavathi and her consort Eeshwara. This festival that sprawls across several days is a testament to the strong sense of community, the significance of faith and lore, and the power of something greater than oneself.

We are grateful to the Kodavas for allowing us to witness and document this integral part of their culture. Special thanks to @bipinbiddappa2020, Machimanda Chinnappa Dore (who will tell you the story) and Nellamakkada @vinodganapathi!
