Our Latina Roots is the name of this project.

I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to use photography as a way to speak up and show how proud I am to be Latina.

With the FIFA World Cup taking place, I’ve noticed so many Latino/as proudly showing off their roots, and it makes me so happy to see our community embracing who we are. But with this project, I wanted to show that our culture isn’t something we only celebrate during moments like these. It’s something we carry with us every single day. No one can take that away from us or make us hide it.

Especially with all the hate our community continues to face, now isn’t just the time to show up for soccer, it’s the time to show up for our people. The World Cup doesn’t change the fact that ICE is still out there separating families, detaining, and murdering our friends, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and neighbors. We need to continue wearing our jerseys, showing up, and speaking out for our community long after the games are over.

We don’t have to be from the same country or culture to stand up for one another. At the end of the day, we are one community.

None of these girls knew each other before this project, yet we all had so much in common from being proud of our roots to experiencing the hate that’s been thrown our way. This wasn’t just a photoshoot. It was a reminder that no matter where we’re from, we have to continue standing with one another.

I hope this project reminds you to never be ashamed of where you come from. Wear your jersey. Wave your flag. Speak your language. Teach your traditions. Support your community. And when one of us is hurting, let it matter to all of us. Our roots are our strength, and as long as we continue standing together, our voices will never be silenced.

If this message resonates with you, don’t let it stop here. Continue supporting Latino owned businesses, learn about what’s happening in our communities, have the hard conversations, contact your local representatives, VOTEEE, volunteer if you’re able, and most importantly, stand up for one another. Real change starts with all of us. by @shots_byally
