POSTS STORIES REELS

We’ve got some new personalities settling in at Shutter Ridge Ranch 🐐✨

Meet Lisa, our sweet white La Mancha girl, and Cowboy, our striking black-and-white buck. They’ve been with us for almost a month now and are settling in beautifully—happy, curious, and already part of the rhythm out here.

They’ve taken a special interest in the ranch cat… who, from time to time, likes to keep them on their toes with surprise zoomies and dramatic leaps 😅 So far, no fainting (we’re impressed - these are not actually fainting goats 🤭).

We’re excited for what’s ahead and hopeful for babies in the future. This is just the beginning of a new chapter for us—learning to work with the milk and eventually create things like cheese, yogurt, cajeta, soaps, lotions, and creams.

Grateful for the journey, the learning, and these two bringing even more life to the ranch 🤍

This season we grew some luffa at the ranch. Luffa is a fruit that can be cooked and used for its nutritional and healing qualities. It is also a healthy swap for your regular plastic body scrubber and synthetic dish washing sponge.

Unlike synthetic sponges, mature loofahs used for dish washing are biodegradable, compostable and hygienic. They are also durable and won’t scratch pots. Their hygienic features are due to their ability to dry faster than synthetic sponges and thereby trapping less bacteria. The best part is, you can grow them yourself and have an endless supply, because one gourd can provide dozens of seeds! You can cut them to any shape you like and give them as gifts. Maybe it’s time to go back to a healthier way of cleaning up, for you and the environment.

This weekend we hosted a community skill sharing workshop in collaboration with @communitycirclela

Participants learned how to make their own raised garden bed boxes, and now they can grow their own food in their own backyards. This wonderful learning opportunity was provided by Phil Rios.

Next, Phil guided the group in learning the fundamentals of archery. He shared valuable information on safe handling of the archer’s tools while ensuring everyone had fun shooting at their target. Many had never tried shooting arrows with a bow before.

The last portion of the skill share day, was wheel thrown pottery. Evette led participants on a journey into making clay creations using a pottery wheel.

There were many firsts for folks today and we love being able to share in those moments with the community here at the ranch. Follow @shutterridgeranch and join the fun at our next community event!

It may look like just a big pile of dirt, but the life this pile gives is precious to the farm. We were graciously gifted this horse manure by a neighbor down the road.

Manure is a natural form of fertilizer, rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This will help us get the areas around the ranch ready for more planting.

This weekend we hosted our first official workshop at the Shutter Ridge Ranch.

Participants learned the fundamentals of working with clay and its different uses. They learned how to identify clay soil, ways to test for clay content, how to mold clay into artistic or functional creations and each hand built their own pieces to keep.

Participants also learned about building structures with clay-based mixtures – cob, adobe, light straw-clay and earthen plaster. They got their hands muddy in the morning and after lunch dove feet first into the earth they were walking on to mix material used to make adobe bricks.

Finally, participants were able to practice applying earthen plaster on the exterior walls of a structure we are fortunate to have available for teaching this nature-based building art. It was a full day of learning, by doing and creating, in a community setting.

The skills taught on this magical day go back thousands of years and were methods used all over the world - many places still use them. We are grateful for the ability to share this knowledge with the community and keep the ancient art of creating sustainably and building affordably alive.

Thanks to Evelyn, Chris, and Christina for leading the workshop and for sharing your valuable knowledge and insights in fun and engaging ways.

This is just the first of many unique learning opportunities that will be available at the ranch.

It’s pumpkin season and not all pumpkins are orange.

Did you know that pumpkins are excellent sources of vitamins A, C, and E, and contain minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and zinc?

They are also high in fiber and a great source of potassium, providing healthy digestion and heart benefits.

Don’t sleep on pumpkins! They are a great source of nutrition.
