I swear I have the worst luck with blind date books. Somehow, my pick always ends up being a book I already own, have already read, or something I know probably isn’t for me🫣😛

This Halloween gift actually turned out to be a book on my TBR! Maybe my luck is finally changing?

👋🏽Have you read this one? What did you think?

As #bannedbooksweek comes to an end, I wanted to honor a few books from my home library. Read them. Buy them. Share them. Borrow them. Cherish them. Talk about them. Protect them.

Now more than ever we have to protect these stories and our right to read them.

There’s something special about meeting an author after reading their book. I usually leave with a different perspective of the story and value it more.

The Wedding People felt part Hallmark movie, part HBO series. Surprisingly, it was a light-hearted story, despite its heavier themes. It touched upon mental health, self-harm, infertility, failed marriage, and friendship. I found the FMC a little inconsistent at times and I while I hoped for a slightly different ending, there was plenty of heart in it.

After meeting Allison and hearing her talk about the book, I especially appreciated the acknowledgement that grief doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. Humor and sadness can exist alongside each other.

Also, this novel took her 10 years to write after starting and stopping it multiple times. I loved that reminder to be gentle with yourself, your goals, and the timing of something that’s meant for you.

September Reading Wrap-up📚Eight books finished, two DNF’d, but still waiting for my next 5⭐️. I’m feeling hopeful about next month. Please don’t let me down, October!🤞🏽

My bookish highlight of the month was definitely getting to meet Allison Espach, author of The Wedding People. I appreciated learning more about her personal journey with grief and the role humor plays in processing loss through writing.
If only I could talk with all of the authors from this months list. Carmen Maria Machado, I’m talking to you girl! I have sooooo many questions😜

✋🏽🛑 Review Time!
These three were interesting to say the least😛

The Possession of Alba Díaz was very atmospheric and packed with so much that it was almost too much! One Italian Summer was the one I connected with most. I love a good grief theme! The relationship between Katy and her mom really resonated with me because of how much I value my relationship with my mom. It also had time travel which was fun and unexpected. Then there was Fruit Fly🤨Like many other viral novels I’ve read, it fell a little flat for me. It certainly wasn’t poorly written, but it dragged on a bit and needed more twists for me. I think viral hype definitely increases my expectations for a novel. And not always in a good way.

Have you read any of these?

🛑 Review Time!
I have a love/hate relationship with lengthy reviews so let’s keep it simple this time, shall we?

Monstrilio was heavy and left me really thinking about my own grief. This novel will boldly remind you that you can’t will something into existence and that it’s better to work through loss than avoid it. Comfort Me with Apples was…different, let’s just say that. What You Are Looking for is in the Library was a cozy, easy read that could have used a bit more depth for me. Have you read any of these?
