Eye health is not just a health issue. It's a global development priority 👁️🌍

Today, as world leaders gather for the first-ever Global Summit for Eye Health, Ireland has an important opportunity to help drive global action to prevent avoidable blindness and ensure everyone can access the eye care they need.

In this video, leaders from CBM Ireland, Orbis Ireland, and Sightsavers Ireland share why this landmark summit matters and why meaningful political commitments, stronger partnerships, and inclusive approaches to eye health are essential to achieving lasting change.

As a co-host of the Summit, Ireland is demonstrating its commitment to global health, disability inclusion, and sustainable development.

Together, we're calling for ambitious commitments that turn political will into meaningful action, break down barriers to eye care, and help ensure no one is left behind.

We’re delighted to see Ireland co-hosting the first-ever Global Summit for Eye Health, taking place on 2 November in Antigua and Barbuda.

Alongside Bangladesh, Guyana and Nigeria, Ireland will help champion eye health on the global stage, bringing governments, international organisations and partners together to drive greater investment and action towards a world where no one is needlessly blind.

Orbis is proud to be contributing to this landmark moment, working with governments and partners to strengthen commitments to accessible, inclusive eye care for all.

We’re also delighted to be working alongside @cbm.ireland and @sightsaversie , building on our shared commitment to improving eye health and tackling avoidable blindness. "Your voice matters." 💬🌍

That was just one of the messages shared by young people at Global Solidarity Hub – Youth for Action on Saturday!

Young people from across Ireland came together at TU Dublin for a day of inspiring conversations, creativity, connection, and collective action, exploring issues from climate justice and human rights to disability inclusion, equality, and global solidarity.

From thought-provoking discussions and interactive workshops to music, performances, and powerful messages of hope, the day was a reminder of what can happen when young people from different backgrounds come together, share their perspectives and learn from one another.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their experiences and helped make the day so special 💛

Youth for Action was organised by the Global Solidarity Hub, a collaboration between Sightsavers Ireland, GOAL, and Trócaire, in partnership with Black and Irish. The event was facilitated by the National Youth Council of Ireland.

This event is recognised as an Associated Event of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

Supported by Dóchas, the EU Presidency Citizen Engagement Sub-Grant, and Irish Aid.

Nothing about us, without us ✊

Women with disabilities are not just participants in development, they are leaders driving change.

At the PODA Women Leaders Conference in Pakistan, the European Union, Sightsavers and partners highlighted the importance of inclusive leadership and meaningful representation.

With the support of the European Union, the three-year Beyond Barriers project, implemented by Sightsavers Pakistan with Awaz Foundation Pakistan and PODA Pakistan, is working to strengthen organisations of women with disabilities, improve workplace policies to address gender-based violence and harassment, and expand access to inclusive training and employment opportunities for women with disabilities 🇪🇺

At the conference, disability rights advocate Abia Akram highlighted the importance of moving beyond token representation to ensure women with disabilities have a meaningful role in leadership and decision-making.

Sightsavers Ireland is grateful to the European Union for its support of Beyond Barriers and continued commitment to inclusive development, and to PODA Pakistan for providing a platform that celebrates and amplifies the voices of women leaders in all their diversity.

Through Irish Aid we work with some of Ireland’s most dedicated organisations who are committed to improving lives in Ireland and further afield.

One of these key partners is Sightsavers.

Access to timely eye care can mean the difference between maintaining sight and losing it unnecessarily.

I visited Bambey Eye Care unit in rural Senegal where Sightsavers have been working with the Senegalese Government and Irish Aid to help in the fight against trachoma, glaucoma and other eye diseases, including the development of cataracts.

The results are staggering.

Because of this diligent, long-term work and commitment, trachoma has been eliminated in Senegal. When this effort started, 9 million people were in danger of blindness and the suffering caused by this horrible but preventable disease.

In Bambey, I was honoured to open a new eye clinic funded by Irish Aid, Sightsavers and local partners. This investment will not only help individuals but also ensure this community can continue to develop and prosper. by @sightsaversie

Global Solidarity Hub's still has a few guest speakers coming to the Youth for Action event this Saturday!! 🌍💫

Niamh Flynn is a youth advocate, mediator and facilitator who works with civil society, academia and youth organisations. She facilitates groups in building their capacity through awareness and engagement in process-oriented methodologies, policy, advocacy and strategy. The aim of her work is to make a meaningful impact multilaterally in relation to achieving long term goals of peace, equality and justice. Niamh works on the YOUTH2030 Global Youth Work Team, at the National Youth Council of Ireland where she supports the integration of global citizenship education with peace and security.

Alex Duffy (she/her) is the Global Youth Work Project Officer with the Youth 2030 programme at the National Youth Council of Ireland. She qualified as a community and youth worker from Maynooth University in 2024 after working in youth work services for a number of years. Alex is passionate about creating meaningful connections and ensuring that young people’s voices are heard, valued and amplified. Her particular areas of interest include environmental and climate justice, youth mental health promotion and empowering young people to take action on the issues that affect them and their communities.

Abdulai Mansaray is based in Dublin Ireland, but originally from Freetown Sierra Leone. Abdulai is an Asylum and Refugee Law, Data Privacy Law, and AI Governance Consultant. He is the Founder and CEO of Compass Pathways CLG, an innovative justice initiative addressing a critical failure point within Ireland’s international protection system. By focusing on process literacy and early intervention, the organisation bridges the gap between asylum seekers, legal professionals, and institutions, strengthening fairness, improving legal outcomes, and advancing a more humane, fair, and accountable protection system.

Abood Aladham is a Palestinian–Jordanian beatbox artist redefining rhythm and identity through voice and sound. Based in Ireland, he is a TEDx speaker, founder of the Jordanian Beatbox Championship, and host of the Wallah Miaow podcast. Fusing hip-hop influences with global rhythms, Abood transforms beatboxing into a powerful live experience that connects culture, storytelling, and raw human sound.
