One act of compassion can change lives in ways we never imagined. ❤️

In my conversation with Simone Scampoli, we explore the beginnings of Capra Libera Tutti—and what becomes possible when we see animals as individuals whose lives matter.

What happens when an animal sanctuary becomes more than a place of rescue? 🐐

At Capra Libera Tutti in Italy, animals once seen as commodities get to live as individuals. They form friendships, make choices, and build relationships on their own terms.

In episode 086 of Better Life for Animals, I talk with Simone Scampoli, the sanctuary’s Executive Director, about how a former farm became a sanctuary, why animal agency matters, and what happens when kids stop to observe an animal instead of reaching to touch it. They realize the animal is observing them, too. 💚

Research can measure what changes in a young person. A sanctuary is where the change happens.

@capraliberatutti is a living place, and our education programme works inside it. Students come up and observe. The animals decide how their day goes: where to be, who to be with, who they let close. That is animal agency, those are animal boundaries, and we keep both at the centre of every visit. A lot passes between a student and a cow without any need for contact. If a cow comes closer, it’s a yes. If a cow walks away, it’s a no, and we stop there.

What we still don’t know is what stays with the students afterwards. That is the work we have started with Victoria Simpson (PHAIR Society and Lancaster University): putting psychology and the daily practice of a sanctuary together, to see if meeting farmed animals as individuals changes the way students look at them.

This collaboration can give something to the whole movement. When research and practice really talk to each other, what comes out is useful far beyond the two of us. A sanctuary can work alongside almost anyone: researchers, campaigners, teachers, people who have never thought of a sanctuary as a partner. This is one form it can take, and there are many others. That is how psychology and places like Capra Libera Tutti together can help write a different future.

We brought this to the @internationalarconference in Luxembourg. Victoria presented her work, I presented ours, and then we opened a discussion with everyone. That discussion was the most useful part: it is where you meet the people already working on this, and where you find out what a collaboration like ours can give them.

The talks matter, and so does everything that happens around them. This collaboration itself started in a conversation at another conference last March. Let’s see where this goes.

Reading Undrowned while watching orcas and whales rise from the ocean and disappear beneath the surface again.

Maybe one of the most romantic moments I have ever experienced.

In the first photo, if you look closely, there is a tiny black dot in the water.

That’s an orca.

In the following videos, with a bit of zoom and a bit of patience, you can see more of what I watched for hours:

emerging, breathing, disappearing, emerging again.

These videos are slow.
Very slow.

If you are looking for something that grabs your attention in the first three seconds, this post is probably not for you.

But if you feel like slowing down for a moment, stay here.

Look at the ocean.

Wait.

At some point, someone rises to breathe.
Then disappears again.

And maybe, for a few minutes, we can remember that meaning does not always move fast. by @betterlife4animals

As the school year comes to an end, more and more schools have continued their journey at @capraliberatutti.

Because what begins in the classroom does not end there.

It continues in a living environment, where students and teachers can observe, encounter, and sometimes interact with other animals in ways that no abstract lesson could ever fully contain.

This carousel gathers just a few glimpses of the many visits that took place in recent months.

At Capra Libera Tutti, education happens through experience. Through presence, attention, relationship, and time. Through the possibility of meeting other animals not as symbols or passive beings, but as individuals with their own desires, boundaries, relationships, and decision-making processes.

This is where what is discussed in the classroom becomes lived.

And often, this is where something shifts.

This has been a deeply important year for our educational work, and we are grateful to all the schools, teachers, and students who have walked this path with us.

We are already preparing for the next school year. Schools and Universities interested in building an educational journey with Capra Libera Tutti are very welcome to get in touch.
