#Midterm by @simoni73

This week, hands on the piano for Your Song by Elton John, 1970. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I first studied it back in 1992 at Hofstra University in Long Island, during summer school. There was a beautiful grand piano in the theater, and after finding the sheet music from Live in Australia, I sat down and started playing it.

I’ve been playing this song for decades. I’ve played it everywhere — and, sadly, sung it too 😂😂 — even in an airport!!!! (Music only.)

I don’t think I’ve ever switched off a keyboard or closed a piano without at least playing the intro.

This song has been, and always will be, one of the soundtracks of my life. (There are two more… stay tuned.)

✨ Un inizio davvero straordinario! ✨

Il percorso è solo all’inizio... restate connessi! 👇 by @simoni73

THE METTERNICH piano weekend continues… 🎹

This time with Adele and her 2011 masterpiece, Someone Like You.

A little gem for pianists — the good ones, that is — and an ambition for modest players like me, who always seem to be missing that little something that makes the sound truly full and engaging. And no, I’m not going to blame the poor quality of the piano! 😉

Anyway, what a beautiful song. Those arpeggios, those repeated patterns at the end… deceptively simple, let’s say.

It’s a song about heartbreak, the pain of a broken relationship, the feeling of loss, and the kind of pain that never completely goes away.

Apparently, Adele first played it for her producer on guitar. He immediately transcribed it for piano and played it back to her.

And Adele’s reaction?
“That’s exactly the right vibe.”

So… if you happen to know an “Adele” who feels like singing it… 🎤😉

I’m (almost) ready. 🎹 as you will briefly very briefly get by @simoni73

Cosa succede all’Onu? Quale i temi principali? E come arriva Trump a questo appuntamento ? Piccola nota. Happy UNGA81 by @simoni73

METTERNICH does not, after all, live on American politics, geopolitics and journalism alone.
So, a small detour into Washington life — and a few reminiscences.
This is where my best ideas usually show up: at the piano. Or, more accurately, at a fairly cheap weighted-key keyboard that is perfectly adequate for someone of my modest abilities.
The piano — let’s dignify it with the name — has been my best friend for years. Though I suspect that, after decades of our relationship, he occasionally wonders:
“How is it possible that we’ve been together this long and you’re still this bad at playing ebony and ivory?”
Fair question.
So, what are we studying/playing this weekend?
“Another Love” by Tom Odell.
Not exactly new — it’s been around for a while — but still gorgeous. That opening piano is devastating. And then there are the lyrics: the scars of a past love that stubbornly refuse to heal.
Beautiful stuff.
Even for a pianist of my… limited distinction.
My interpretation, however, sounds less like a piano piece and more like a heated dispute between two profoundly tone-deaf birds.
You will not be hearing it. I give you my word.
Otherwise, I’d almost certainly end up before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
And Metternich — lifelong defender of sovereign states and generally suspicious of international law meddling in domestic affairs — would hardly approve of the ICC entering his own backyard.
Some things, after all, should remain matters of national sovereignty.
Including my piano playing. by @simoni73
