Meet Contestant #5 — Atana Essesien Bassey 🩺

“I want to be part of the change that happens in our society, in our healthcare, and in the world.”

For Atana, that isn't just a statement. It's the work she's already doing.

A registered public health nurse and midwife, Atana is currently completing her internship at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Calabar — with mental health, women's health and children's health at the heart of her work.

Through outreach after outreach, she has seen what access to healthcare can mean for real people — and what happens when that access is missing.

Her work with the Blue Girls Initiative is another part of that mission: helping expand access to healthcare and education for the girl child, and for women and children more broadly.

For Atana, becoming the Next Nurse isn't a departure from that purpose.

It's a bigger platform to take it further.

I am Atana Essesien Bassey — Contestant No. 5.

❤️ Rooting for #5?

The Next-Nurse Conference was truly a blast💜

It was a beautiful experience at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, Lagos, Nigeria.

Before the conference, I shared a little piece of my story. But sitting in that great old hall, surrounded by brilliant minds and fellow nurses, it suddenly became more than a story, it became a conversation between me and myself, I felt the weight of the healthcare system.

I heard its silent call: “We need you.”

And in that moment, I realized that being a nurse is not just about standing at the bedside. It is about standing in the gap for innovation, advocacy, leadership, access, and the future of healthcare. It was a battle of me against myself, a battle between who I am and who I am becoming.

The generation before us has carried the "torch" for years. Now, they are beginning to hand it over with a "touch" of great responsibility, entrusting us to learn, grow, connect, and eventually take the lead.

And perhaps that is why connecting with other nurses matters. We cannot transform healthcare in isolation. We need one another—to share ideas, challenge limitations, build solutions, and become better than we were yesterday.

As Dr Kemi Ogunyemi said: “Don’t stay around people that say NO.”And even more, be an AI innovator, not just an AI consumer.

Those words stayed with me. So, guess who is next in line?

Me. Rhema.
Dee_wakanurse.

The future is calling.

And I am ready to learn, ready to grow, ready to connect, and ready to lead because the future of healthcare doesn't just belong to nurses, the future of healthcare begins with nurses. by @simply_aty

She works where most cameras can't go.

Not because there's nothing to see—but because protecting her patients comes first.

Meet Nurse #05, Bassey Atana Essesien (@simply_aty)—Registered Nurse, Midwife, and psychiatric nursing intern in Calabar.

From morning devotion to caring for patients, hitting the gym after work, and ending the day with more studying, this is the discipline behind the uniform.

Some parts of nursing can't be filmed.

But they can be felt.

Contestant No.5

People often put nursing in a box. To grow as long as it was within the confines allowed.
The next nurse cannot afford to fit in that box. We must drive the change ourselves. That is what this competition means to me. A stage that spotlights what’s been going on in the shadows…. Growth, Innovation, Change.
Steps in the right direction.

My 23rd birthday !!!! Wow 🥹 God has outdone himself in my life time and time again 🔥. My life is a testament of His love and grace. Today fills my heart with so much joy & gratitude 🥺🥺 My Faithful God. Thank you Abba, my Yahweh. I’m not ashamed or afraid to say I am nothing without God but I am everything in Him🤭❤️
I have something amazing to share, I pray you read till the end❤️

I made a decision on the 1st of January 2024. It was one that changed my life forever. The choice was to no longer be a lukewarm Christian and embrace Christ because my Jesus had a choice and He chose me. He didn’t choose me just in words but in deeds too. He chose me wholeheartedly and I had to choose Him too wholeheartedly. I just had to. He had a choice to walk away but He chose me and you. Despite the pain, humiliation and suffering. He stood fast for our sake (you & I).
This is not a typical birthday caption but I’m glad you’re still reading. God’s love is unfathomable and vast, so much so that we can’t wrap our heads around why He would send His Son to die for us. To go through all that He did for us mere mortals (Psalms 8:4 NLT) but the thing is God is so utterly taken with us and wants to have the deepest and truest relationship with us. He’s so interested in every little detail of our lives. (Psalm 37:23) He’s so intentional 🥺🥹 and knows us so well. Truly no one can love you the way God loves you and He sees you. He’s seen all of you and still wants you ❤️
I’m on my own journey of having that relationship with him and I wrote this little epistle so someone could see reason to start their own journey or encouragement to keep at it. He’s always waiting for you. Always has, always will. I hope you will choose Him today because He chose you first and loved you first. Come as you are, His arms are always open ready to receive you 🤗. Shalom ❤️
