NEON FOR EMBASSY SUITES. 22½’ x 53’ by American sculptor Stephen Antonakos. 1988.

During the height of the Embarcadero’s urban revitalization, San Diego’s Centre City Development Corporation encouraged, and in some cases, made it a requirement for downtown developers to include high-caliber public art into their new projects. Thank god. Years later, we’re still appreciating the groundwork that these institutions, committees (hello Tibor) and community leaders laid to help make our downtown skyline a nice thing to look at.

Leading up to the commission, Hugh Davies and the MCASD had acquired Antonakos’ site-specific work, INCOMPLETE NEON SQUARE FOR LA JOLLA (1984). The relationship was built, and by the time CCDC and the hotel’s art consultants met, his name was already at the top of the shortlist. Long story short, Antonakos was selected to install a piece above the 12-story hotel to coincide with its opening.

Stephen Antonakos (1926–2013) was a pioneer of light art and minimalist public sculpture, famous for transforming raw architectural spaces using geometric neon forms. You can visit the sculpture at the Embassy Suites at 601 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101. by @simulationdiary

The castles of San Diego 🏰

Storybook Architecture, a product of postwar America in the 1920s. American soldiers were coming back from their tours of duty, and the architecture of the European countrysides they once fought on eventually found their way into the housing boom of Southern California. I know, it’s dark. Around the same time, the Hollywood film industry was growing, and in many cases, set designers were hired for their skills in recreating the ol’ charm of England, France and Germany. It’s kitschy and a hodgepodge of microstyles, but most importantly, it’s a visual landmark of where we were in history and how experimental architecture spoke to the consumer at the time.⁣⁣

Different subcategories, like gingerbread and Tudor make up #StorybookArchitecture, but this photoset documents the turret-faced/castle examples of the style. Above are a few that I took photos of over the last few months in South Park, North Park, City Heights and Bird Rock. by @simulationdiary

A couple of photos from a trip to Tokyo in 2003. It was a year after my first visit, and after months of talking nonstop about how amazing Tokyo was, a crew of about 12 of us made the trip for our yearly Friendsgiving.

I was deep into collecting sneakers back then, and those first couple of trips to Tokyo were rough. No Google Maps, no smartphones, just Superfuture printouts and things I’d read about on Being Hunted, NikeTalk, and Crooked Tongues.

I don’t really get to see a lot of these people anymore, but those were some good times. I miss all those dudes.

The Prada store in Aoyama opened a few months before this photo. Designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron. I’m pretty sure this photo was used by Evil Monito Mag.

Bape Cafe. Nigo still ran the company, so of course, Hajime Sorayama provided some of the art. Great curry and great highballs. I still have a sugar cube from this spot.

The smallest bathroom.

Again, 2003 and The Last Samurai had the lush media buy on all the prime spots. So funny.

Geoff McFetridge for AD21 space. This was for the tearaway Vandals.

About a block away from what is now T-Site Daikanyama. I always think about this trip every time I walk by this building. The revolving T-shirt display, at the time, a signature of #MasamichiKatayama (Wonderwall Inc) retail spaces.

If I ever get a chance to make a cardboard bench, it’s because of Final Home. I’m pretty sure this was next to the APC store in Harajuku.

There were many. In the 90s, it was Point-Point Joint, then a few years later it was Conching’s, and for a brief moment there was Maharlikas. But for the last 20 years, no one has held the crown in National City longer than the folks at Tita’s Kitchenette.

This is the classic Filipino turo-turo (meaning point point) spot, where you see the hot plates and point to the entrees you want with your rice. The aunties behind the counter will always give you more than you need, and if you’re with friends, a 2-item combo and an extra side of rice will easily feed three people.

Above is my favorite order. It’s a 2-item rice combo ($15.45) with menudo and their world-famous BBQ chicken. The uncle behind the glass has been turning skewers since before Obama was president, so you know he’s got it dialed in. First-time visitor recommendation: the menudo is an absolute must. I kind of go back and forth between the BBQ chicken and lumpia, but either choice is a good start for first-timers. Also pro tip, the side of pork sinigang is free so be sure to ask for it. by @simulationdiary

Loved riding up the Empire State Trail, biking to the Little Red Lighthouse, tasty hand-pulled noodles, all the Noguchi, cobblestone streets, the chunky pavement on Essex, MUD, Brooklyn, Chrissy’s Pizza, LES, Chad Senzel’s shop, spending $40 on drinks at Happier Grocery, Chen’s Watches, Greenwich Locksmiths, no line at Katz’s, biking through Central Park, and just being a tourist on a last-minute New York trip with no plans. Hopefully back this fall to ride the OCA Trail 🚲 by @simulationdiary

A few years ago, Action Bronson called it the most sought after slice in New York City. @chrissys.pizza, located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is the permanent location for the once DIY-in-my-apartment-during-COVID-baking-project by Chris Hansell.

The pizza here is super thin, and after a sprint from Carroll Gardens to Greenpoint on my bike, I’m pretty sure I would’ve been able to make their wall-of-fame made for those able to put down a whole pie under 20 minutes. Luckily, my friend @leryanlegaspi, who moved here from San Diego last summer, gave me an excuse to save a few calories.

Since they only sell whole pies, we ordered a half-and-half split between the RICH JACOBS (RIP!) and the 35 ORCHARD. The 35 ORCHARD is a tribute to another favorite slice of mine from SCARR’S, but for location exclusivity’s sake, I would’ve went for the full RICH JACOBS order, which was a little less heavy on the jalapeños.

Since most of you reading this are from LA and San Diego, be sure to visit the next time you’re in New York. And for the vintage heads, Fantasy Explosion is just a short walk away. Also good.

Chrissy’s Pizza, 10/10 by @simulationdiary

I tried the mustard-fried burger at In-N-Out and I loved it. It’s probably my new favorite order. For $11.48, the meal included a side of fries and a medium pink lemonade. For all the risk takers out there, sneaking in your own drink will put you well under the “$10-and-under meal” rule according to my friend Keith.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
How to get it? Ask for a mustard-fried Double-Single with a whole grilled onion. It’s tangy, caramelized, and with just one slice of cheese it’s not too crazy.

After all these years, I’m still learning the In-N-Out lingo, but the server behind the counter was really helpful. 10/10 by @simulationdiary

Last night, @nourishedbytime_ to a very sold out @casbahsandiego. Really upset that I didn’t get a chance to catch Zsela’s opening. Those 8:30 set times are even a little early for me! by @simulationdiary
