'Cannot Be Undone', 2026 Ah, THAT'S it.  It was the wrong way up.  Photographer Alfred Stieglitz, lover of Georgia O'Keefe, displayed his ‘Equivalents’ (photos of the sky 1920s - see image 2) whichever way up felt right, in order to remove their descriptive qualities. He even wrote on the back 'all ways up'!  He wanted to remove recognisable elements such as a horizon line in order to abstract the work and evoke a more emotional response in the viewer.   Flipping my work 90° feels like it has had the opposite effect. The main structure of the photograph is actually an image of a fireplace, but turned this way it becomes recognisable as a window.  Both quite magical things relating to change and transformation. The phrase 'cannot be undone' will be hauntingly familiar to most people that work with digital media, before the weighted question, 'do you wish to proceed?' but has wider connections with regret or destructive actions.  So the phrase feels of our times but is also an homage to Stieglitz's playful compositions.   #contemporaryphotography #abstractphotography #colouredlight #equivalents  #alfredstieglitz L by @sj8ird
(BE)LONGING Velorose July Monday - Saturday 12pm - 6pm . . . Today we continue our journey through (BE)LONGING (82 artworks by 73 artists) These 3 artists each ask us to consider belonging through remembered experience and practice, quiet observation, and intimate and subtle mark-making . . . Sarah Bird @sj8ird You Have a New Memory (2026) Chromogenic Print on Fuji Gloss Paper 42cm x 30cm Framed (1/5) £309.75 22cm x 16cm Unframed (Edition of 5 + 2AP) £236.25 (Artwork 1) . . . London-based artist-educator Sarah Bird’s photographic work is an exploration of the sense of disembodiment brought about by the rapidly advancing world. Exhibited widely, her works have featured in Aesthetica’s ‘Future Now’ and Germany’s AIT magazine . . . ‘You Have a New Memory’ is a layered digital photograph, depicting being on the edge of something. The shallow spaces glow like digital screens that are part of our everyday lives, meanwhile referencing old interior painting devices for thresholds, such as the fireplace or the curtain. How might we belong in our future world? . . . #belonging #velorose #veloroselondon #contemporaryart #londonart (BE)LONGING Velorose July Monday - Saturday 12pm - 6pm . . . Alzbeta Jaresova @bettyjaresova Untitled (2024) Graphite on Paper, Unique 42cm x 32cm Framed £840 (Artwork 2) . . . Alzbeta Jaresova (b.1987) has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both in the UK and internationally. She has received several awards, including the Griffin Art Prize (2012) and the Dentons Art Prize (2017), and was granted support from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in 2018 . . . Betty’s work examines how architecture and the built environment are continually appropriated to express political, social and cultural values, creating a tension between utopian and dystopian conditions. She explores the psychological impact of the spaces we inhabit; environments for which our bodies develop a longing and physical memory. The protagonists of her work hold no individual identity; defined only by posture and gesture, the sense of longing becomes universal. Never arriving or departing, the figures are instead held, suspended, embodying the quiet unresolved state of bein by @sj8ird

I thought I would gather a selection of my 'backrooms'- inspired images in celebration of the release of the film of the same name (saw it yesterday, it's great) - @backroomsmovie I always thought of the backrooms* as a bit of a niche concept, relating largely to a generation younger than my own, maybe specifically to gamers, which I'm not, but its imagery stirred something so familiar and I can't deny it's influence upon my own work.  I've not really articulated it beyond slinging a backrooms hashtag on the odd post, but it's a thread (trail of breadcrumbs....?) that ties a whole bunch of my series' together.  I think the reception of the film proves how resonant a theme it is, mirroring the sense of disembodiment and existential crises brought about by the digital age. There are other themes of memory, isolation and trauma woven in too.  It's seductive and repellent, in all its magnolia nostalgia.  It's also wonderfully weird.  Of course, this isn't the first time architecture is used as symbolic of our psyches (if that doesn't oversimplify it too much), but there's a lot about it that feels fresh. I've moved on from these kind of images now (for now, at least)... *A kind of mythological online labyrinth of endless interconnecting rooms, that always look a bit 'off', dated and creepy.  Sometimes inhabited with nostalgic objects or nightmarish creatures.   #backrooms #contemporaryphotography #liminalspace #labyrinth #psychogeography by @sj8ird
A date that BELONGS in your diary... Thurs 25th June is the opening celebration for (BE)LONGING (Being, Longing, Belonging) at Velorose Gallery @veloroselondon , 6-9pm. 'You Have A New Memory' has finally been tweaked, polished, printed and framed for the occasion (detail pictured). It's all part of London Festival of Architecture @londonfestivalofarchitecture too. #londonartexhibition #contemporaryphotography #londonfestivalofarchitecture #veloroselondon #belonging by @sj8ird
Meanwhile, in the digital world, I've been re-working this series from 2019.  2019! 👀 Although visually different from the darkroom stuff, they also follow the path of visual distortion, this time through blended layers of colour.  I think of these as being on the very edge of something, and have been influenced by the use of the curtain as a device in painting as trompe l'oiel to invite - or exclude - the viewer. 👀 One has already escaped into the real world so watch this space.... #contemporaryphotography #abstractphotography #colourphotography #artnow by @sj8ird
☄️☄️☄️As it's mid-June, what better time to re-visit resolutions.   My creative year starts pretty much anytime, and lasts as long as I want it to, so the idea of making a New Year Resolution is pretty redundant, but I made two this year(ish):  One, stop submitting to open calls - use the admin time to work.  Well, I've already broken the former- more on that later. Two- instead of starting a million new threads, re-visit the three hundred ideas already sparked in sketchbooks, photoshoots, experiments.   I've stuck with this one better, going back to some gelatinous photograms I made with acrylic forms in the dark room about a year ago.  I had been thinking about something to do with technology and translation, pixels and distortion, at the time.  This time I've used chipped glass, and the results look like satellites and meteors.  Hopefully not space junk...  ☄️☄️☄️ #photogram #cameralessphotography #prisms #meteor #contemporaryphotography by @sj8ird
