The Why Behind AI Series
AI@CHHS: Dr. Cole Armstrong

https://blogs.sjsu.edu/chhs/2026/03/26/ai-chhs-dr-cole-armstrong/ by @sjsuchhs

At San José State University, we recognize that more than one billion people worldwide live with a mental or behavioral health disorder. As AI and emerging technologies transform how care is delivered and experienced, we see a powerful opportunity to design solutions that expand access and advance equity from the start.

That vision guided SJSU’s Health TechQuity Conference, “Behavioral Health in the Age of Emerging Technology,” where we brought together scholars, policymakers, practitioners and innovators to explore how technology can strengthen behavioral health care while keeping people at the center.

We are grateful to Audrey Shillington, Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences (@sjsuchhs), and to our dedicated faculty and students who are leading work that supports underserved communities and advances evidence-based care. At SJSU, we are committed to shaping a future where innovation and opportunities for all move forward together. by @sjsuchhs

📢 Student Spotlight Alert! Next up is Hannah Tofesha.

Hannah is a @sjsupublichealth major with a minor Child & Adolescent Development who works alongside Dr. Janet Bang in @chad_sjsu within @sjsuchhs. Dr. Bang’s research centers on caregiver–toddler interactions and early socio-emotional development, and through this mentorship, Hannah has gained valuable experience in developmental research and data analysis.

Within this project, Hannah is developing her own research question examining whether children later reported to be on the autism spectrum demonstrate differences in baseline BITSEA socio-emotional scores compared to their peers. She is conducting group comparisons and analyzing early developmental indicators to better understand how early patterns may relate to later outcomes. 🧠

Hannah is passionate about understanding how early developmental patterns shape long-term outcomes. She hopes her work will contribute to evidence-based practices that better support children and families. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 She is especially excited to present her findings at an upcoming poster session and is passionate about using research to inform evidence-based practices that support children and families.

We can’t wait to see you present your project at the Celebration of Research next month, Hannah! 🎉 #urop #sjsuurop #undergraduateresearch by @sjsuchhs
