Why might your SLP ask you to say “E” instead of “AH” during a stroboscopy? 👀🎤

The vowel you produce can change the position of your larynx and vocal tract, which can affect how clearly we visualize your vocal folds. “E” can help provide a different view of the vocal folds and surrounding structures!

The goal? Get the clearest look possible at how your vocal folds move and vibrate. 🔬

🌻🎤 You guys!!! Welcome to my new series: Famous Folds!
First up: Steve-O! @steveo

Steve-O’s signature raspy and strained voice is associated with false vocal fold phonation, where the false vocal folds vibrate to produce sound instead of relying solely on the true vocal folds. This can create that deep, rough, gravelly quality.

🌟 Stay tuned for the next celeb in the series!!

Tension in your neck = tension around your larynx 👀

Here are a few of my go-to stretches/massage techniques to help release tension through the neck, larynx, and surrounding muscles:

1️⃣ **Clavicle + gentle head lift** → helps stretch the anterior neck/thyrohyoid region

2️⃣ **SCM stretch** → turn your head + gently jut your chin

3️⃣ **Lateral neck stretch** → tilt your head to each side

4️⃣ **Under-chin massage** → gentle massage along the base of the tongue/submental area to help release tension

✨ Gentle is the key! These should never be painful.

Save this for your next voice warm-up or tension-release routine 🎤🗣️

Why the blue food? 🔵👀

During a FEES, we use dye to help differentiate food/liquid from secretions and make the bolus easier to visualize.

FEES = Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing 👃🏼📹
