You are cordially invited to the staged reading of The Stingy Suitor by Anna Emilia Daniel, a Slovak-American writer, directed by her great grandchild Lee Harrison Daniel, a Brooklyn-based theater artist of Slovak descent.

About the playwright
Anna immigrated to the US with her father, a Slovak Lutheran minister, in 1903, and they settled in Chicago. She spent much of her adult life in the predominantly Hungarian neighborhood of Delray, Detroit. She wrote and self-published The Stingy Suitor in 1931.

About the play
The play focuses on Mildred, a young woman, and her two suitors, the kind-but-poor Johnny Smart and the rich-but-stingy Willie Sapp. Mildred’s mother, Mrs. Pride, wants her to marry Willie, but Mildred and Johnny devise a plan to make her see Willie for who he truly is and allow Mildred to marry Johnny instead. The play draws on elements of farce, melodrama, and radio theater that was popular around the time it was written.

About the performance
The Stingy Suitor will perform at The Tank, located at 312 W 36th Street, on Thursday, February 20th at 9:30pm. In addition to reading the play, Lee Harrison Daniel will be sharing some of his family’s story and sharing an excerpt of an interview he did with his dad, Anna’s grandson, about her life and the play.
