What actually happens when you have a baby through Australia’s public hospital system? 🇦🇺

I had all three of my babies through the public system in Western Australia and somehow, despite living at the same address, I gave birth at three different hospitals. 😂

The journey usually starts before the positive test, with folic acid, vaccinations and a GP appointment. Then come the blood tests, referrals, ultrasounds, NIPT, pregnancy vaccinations, the glucose drink, the GBS swab…and eventually, preparing for birth.

But no two pregnancies are ever exactly the same.

My first pregnancy was so uncomplicated that I remember wondering whether I was visiting the hospital enough. During my second, I experienced heavy bleeding and had to stop working and rest until around 16 weeks. With my third, concerns about the baby’s size meant weekly growth scans.

Alongside my three births, I also experienced three miscarriages. So this isn’t a perfect pregnancy checklist—it’s simply what the journey looked like for me. 🫶

Despite the difficult parts, I was so happy with the care I received through the WA public system that I chose it three times.

Care can vary depending on your hospital, state, health needs and model of care. This post shares my personal experience and general information, not medical advice always check current recommendations with your healthcare provider.

Was your pregnancy care similar, or completely different where you live?

Save this for later or send it to someone who’s pregnant or preparing to have a baby in Australia. ❤️

A little taste of my Korean childhood, shared with my three 🥰

I grew up drinking banana milk in Korea, and this homemade smoothie is inspired by that childhood favourite. Now it’s an afternoon treat with my own kids, here in Perth 🥹

Our colourful @smoo.com.au cups joined us for backyard smoothies—and even Mum got her own!

🍌 Korean banana milk–inspired smoothie Here’s a simple version to try:

• 1 large ripe banana • 250mL chilled milk • 1–2 tsp honey, to taste

Blend everything until smooth and enjoy straight away! Add a splash more milk if you prefer a thinner consistency.

Double the recipe for a bigger batch.

Save this for your next family smoothie afternoon 💛

There were so many activities to choose from, so we picked one from each Wonderific Labs pack 🫧💧🍃

We tried Bubbling Potions, Floating Treasure and Leaf Secrets — and all three kids (ages 4, 6 and 9) had a favourite! The giant bubbles were definitely the big finale 😂

There are more activities to explore in each pack. Which one should we try next?

A tiny birthday invitation. So many parent questions. 🎈😂

What do I buy? Can siblings come? Am I staying or dropping off?

With three kids in Perth, we’ve attended everything from play centre parties to bowling, laser tag and backyard celebrations. Along the way, I’ve picked up a few things that make the next invitation easier to navigate.

My personal must-do? A birthday card written by the kids—wobbly handwriting and all—attached securely to the present. I love knowing which friend each gift came from. 💌

We don’t organise a big party every year, either. Some birthdays are family celebrations while travelling, and others are parties with friends. There’s a lot of love—and work—behind those two hours. ❤️

These are our experiences, rather than rules every Australian family follows. Always check with the host, school or venue.

Save the checklist on the last slide for your next invitation, or send this to a parent figuring it all out.

What’s your one unwritten birthday-party rule? 👇

When a friend in Perth, WA says, “Take as many perilla leaves as you like.” 🌿😂

This audio is exactly what was happening inside my Korean brain while picking them in her front garden.

Apparently, my kind of happiness is a handful of perilla leaves and permission to keep going 🤭

Choosing childcare in Australia? The first time, I didn’t even know what questions to ask. 😅

I followed a recommendation from a mum in my mothers’ group — and all three of my children ended up going to the same centre.

They started at around 12 months, 18 months and 6 months. Three different starts, and three different settling-in experiences.

Looking back, familiar educators made such a difference to how comfortable I felt leaving them there. 🫶

These are the things I’d ask about now: opening hours, fees, meals, nappies, educator ratios, daily updates — and who will comfort my child when they need it.

If you’re booking childcare tours, this is the checklist I wish I’d had.

📌 Save it for your visits.

A kids’ cafe with its own train, carousel and a HUGE ball pit?! 🎠🚂

Our three, aged 9, 6 and 4, went from the slides and fishing to the trampoline, pretend play and free arcade games. Lunch was delicious too — especially that cheese pull! 🧀

The Halloween lolly bags were a lovely little bonus 👻🍬 The kids are already asking when we can come back 😂
