After completing a ministry traineeship, Annie started looking for a theological college that could help prepare her for serving God overseas. She did her research and found SMBC was a good fit…

Initially nervous about the demands of studying at a theological college, Annie soon found her faith being enriched in ways she hadn’t expected as she engaged with God’s Word with others and heard from missionaries serving around the world.

“My assumption was that Bible college was all about heavy, abstract theology, and I initially felt unfit to come. But it surprised me how accessible it was,” Annie says.

“I appreciated starting with learning about the New Testament and Old Testament, and revisiting familiar passages that I’d grown up with, but with a depth and breadth I hadn’t accessed in other contexts.”

“I’ve enjoyed seeing how the different aspects of the Bible and the Christian life that we learn about are so integrated.”

There have also been more challenging moments at college where Annie’s understanding of God – and her own identity – have been stretched.

“Everything that I’d known feels like it’s been deepened and challenged and refined,” she says.

“It’s been a really rich experience, and not just in a head-knowledge way. I walk out of every lecture feeling like I’d just heard a sermon. It’s very pastoral, and I can see how what I’m learning could apply to my life, the decisions I make, my character and my relationships.”

“I thought I knew myself and my skillsets… but being at college, I’m discovering new aspects of my personality, gifts and opportunities, and new ways of thinking about mission. So I’m having to ask again, ‘what could God do with all this?’”

Darcy is a Bible college student at SMBC, preparing for full-time gospel ministry with his wife Bella and their two boys. It hasn’t been a clear path to ministry, involving a near-death experience, a nursing career, a church plant in Coffs Harbour, and a slow, growing openness to join God’s work in the world.

The years at SMBC have grown Darcy in ways he didn’t anticipate.

“Something that one of our lecturers, said early on when I got here was that there’s the academic curriculum you’ll do here, but there’s also God’s curriculum. That distinction was really helpful in thinking that God has stuff for me here that I need to grow in and see.”

For anyone wondering whether formal training is really necessary, Darcy has a reframe that has shaped how he now thinks about every decision.

“I’ve come to understand that asking ‘God, what do you want me to do?’ isn’t actually the right question. The question to ask is: ‘What is God doing, and how can I get on board with what he’s doing?”

“When I ask that question, whatever I can do to position myself more and more to see the good news of Jesus go out, that’s worth doing.”

“For some people asking that question, the answer might be coming to Bible college. It might not be. But if God is about seeing the lost get saved and edifying his people, then it’s worth us doing everything we can to get on board with that.”

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20 by @smbcollege

“For 72 years now, I’ve been able to go back to Ethiopia... we are seeing the Lord do some wonderful things. In areas where there were no Bibles, no churches, today there are well over 1,000 churches.”

Dick McLellan arrived at SMBC a few days after his 20th birthday, in 1952. “The Lord had called me, I believe, as a missionary to Africa. While I was at SMBC, I heard of the great need there was in Ethiopia.”

When Dick arrived in Ethiopia with his wife, Vida, he literally built the roads to reach unreached people with the gospel. Now the country that was once a mission field is sending missionaries of its own.

Dick, who is in his nineties, recently returned to Ethiopia to preach in Amharic to a convention of 40,000 people, where he was given a traditional gift in honour of his ministry.

As part of celebrating 110 years of SMBC, we sat down with Dick to get a taste of his amazing story of seeing God at work in powerful ways.

Growing up with missionary parents in West Africa, Ruth wanted to do something "grand" for God with her life. She came to Bible college to grow her heart for God's church and the lost. She discovered a God who is bigger than her dreams, who deepened her passion to share the gospel, and who equipped her for a new chapter of faithful ministry she never expected. Ruth has discovered there’s more than one way to live a grand life for God.

Israel’s kings have failed, and Ahab is the worst of them, chasing Baal and provoking the Lord. Enter Elijah.

In 1 Kings 17, God shows that He alone shuts the skies, sustains life and raises the dead. In the heart of Baal’s homeland, during a devastating drought, God’s sovereign might is revealed in the faith of a Gentile widow. She is resigned to death, yet finds life when she welcomes Elijah.

But Elijah is not the hero, rather, his life and the events in 1 Kings 17 point us forward to Christ, the ultimate display of God’s power to save and sustain the life of His people. With Christ the real hero, Elijah is then used by James, as one who models faith for ordinary believers taking God at His word.

Being a Christian involves ‘following’ the Lord Jesus, not around Galilee and Judea, but in the course of our daily lives. The four Gospels provide four different records of what Jesus said and did. They are the foundation for knowing and understanding what he has done for us, as well as what he said about God and his will. If we really want to ‘follow’ Jesus, if we really want to be salt and light in our world, then the Gospels need to be our regular reading matter.

In this unit we study the different contributions that each Gospel makes to this portrait of Jesus, his life and words, his death and resurrection. Be prepared to listen to Jesus’ words and ponder his meaning, both for disciples in the first century and in the twenty first century. Be ready to encounter Jesus in a fresh way, as we examine the four Gospels of the New Testament. by @smbcollege
