Monologue - Vol. 055 @snocos__ @make_kwento

What changed me always shape how I navigate my life, work, and who I choose to align with. As painful as that first moment was, it turned out to be the greatest gift the universe could have given me.

It revealed who truly understood me, what I value, how I identify as a person of colour, a woman, and the experiences I’ve held within that identity.

I was fortunate to have a strong circle around me who validated my feelings and gave me the support and fire to take my next step.

Episode one was hard on me because:
1) I’ve never made a gingerbread house???????!!!!!!
2) I’ve never been on TV like THAT
3) I wanted to make sure that if I went out the first episode, that I went BALLS TO THE WALL. This means we’re pulling out all the knowledge I had from that time you make that popsicle stick bridge in grade 7, to grade 10 geometry, to freshman woodshop (stellar class btw, OCAD did that one right).
4) If I were to go home it would be devastating to dip based on something I wanted to represent so well

Me being me, I just had to redo the house (and wretched cookie) until I got it right. All under 3 hours and sans cameras and narration.

Recreating my childhood home was so special because it wasn’t just my home, it was EVERYONES. We had very few blood relatives here in Canada growing up, but we definitely cant say that now! My parents are such pillars in our family it literally brings me to tears everytime I think or talk about it. Mostly because it’s hard to articulate the struggle in words, but also because it’s hard to express gratitude for something so big. I can’t even count how many people (family, friends, far off acquaintances), lived with us and later on spent Christmas with us even after moving on to their next eras in life. I wanted to bring our story to a bigger stage because it’s the story of sososo many. 27 pieces aren’t even enough to build a real picture.

Anyways…….enough sap…I just really appreciate how formative this generosity was in my childhood and I had to immortalize it in gingerbread. It almost took me out but I would die trying if I had to 😩😤 by @make_kwento

I’m SO beyond excited to share something I’ve been holding onto all year, but before I do, I just wanted to say thank you!!

My journey with @make_kwento has been nothing without the patrons who chose us to celebrate their big days, big wins, and big birthdays with. KWENTO as a bakery is bigger than just cakes, it’s the stories that lead up to and follow the cake. The moments we get to share with you, the customer. This growth has to be met with gratitude 💙 a huge thank you also goes out to my current and past team members. You keep this vision going and going and going. You are the enablers of cake creativity and I love you all for it 🫶🏽

We’ve accomplished a lot with this bakery and I’m so excited to share some big news that I’ve been holding onto. A small handful of folks know that I’d been working on something — another big accomplishment that I’m so incredibly nervous to share but also so excited about!!! I have a secret bucket list for myself and where I can take KWENTO, and this particular item was maybe the hardest hurdle I’ve had to overcome. I hope you’ll be as stoked as I am!
