A dress, a dance, and a name that was already true
By Dave Fisher @dave_fisher_photography

Liyema has been looking forward to her Matric Dance (South Africa’s version of Prom), a milestone and celebration that marks the end of formal schooling. However, the dream of attending is not a reality for many who come from impoverished communities like hers, where harsh economic realities prevent access on many levels.

Where Stones Become Home

by Ayman Fuad @ayman.fuad

Where Stones Become Home documents the lives of displaced families living in the remote mountains of Al Malah, Lahj Governorate, Yemen. Far from the nearest urban areas, families have rebuilt their lives using what the surrounding landscape provides. In an isolated mountain environment where resources are limited, these families continue to adapt, work, and build. The series is a quiet document of family life, resilience and the human capacity to create home from what is available.

SDN Salon

Wednesday, October 21, 12:30 pm ET

The SDN Salon provides informal online networking opportunities for SDN members. Bring a cup of tea or coffee, a work or portfolio in progress, ideas to discuss, or simply yourself. The SDN Salon is an opportunity to share your work, view the work of others, and to talk about any issues that are relevant to being a documentary photographer in 2026.

Work must be documentary—loosely defined. Up to four presenters and two alternates will be selected. Each presenter will have 12-15 minutes to share and discuss their project.

Registration is required to both attend and present work.

While not required, we strongly encourage presenters to submit projects to the SDN website.

Artist talk with Janet Jarmen
In conversation with Sarah Leen

Tuesday, October 27
Leica Gallery Boston
Doors open and light refreshments: 6:00 pm
Program begins: 6:30 pm
74 Arlington Street, Boston

Janet Jarman’s "Birth Wars" is both a film and book about the pursuit of dignified childbirth with quality care. Through her lens, Jarman brings us closer to a problem that faces women in many countries around the world.

Jarman’s story unfolds in Guatemala and Mexico where Indigenous communities traditionally rely on midwives for childbirth but where medical authorities and practitioners favor hospital births, leading to an abnormally high number of caesarean sections, unnecessary procedures, and feelings of disrespect and abuse. It explores the clash between a woman-centered midwifery model based on ancestral knowledge and the contrasting institutional birth practices of today.

Photographers:
Lori Waselchuk @fototornado
Brian Branch-Price @cowboyamericaninstitution

Panelists:
Anisah Sabur @anisahsabur
Lori Waselchuk @fototornado
Deborah Zalesne @dzalesne
Christopher Blackwell @christopherwblackwell
Jessica Sandoval, moderator: @chicanista1

Before the Cross Came
By Dawid Rojek

Before the Cross Came documents contemporary Polish believers— people in the face of the Catholic Church’s crisis, have found spirituality in the faith of their ancestors: in sacrificial rites, the ritual of the circle, the cult of nature, and Slavic deities. The photographs show not history, but a living faith practiced today, with all its emotions, community, and sacredness.

Isolated but not alone
By Simone Francescangeli @animainmoto

Due to economic instability and changing weather conditions, Chilean artisanal lumberjacks have to push themselves to work harder in remote areas like small islands in the southern Austral Fjords. Their resource: Guaiateca cypress. Its wood is highly resistant to water and humidity, making it highly sought after for high-end shipbuilding. The lumberjacks face long periods of isolation (sometimes months), bad weather conditions, and scarcity of resources to find the right cypresses.

What Will They Choose to Inherit?
By Hillol Sen @the_wanderflux

For generations, a remote village in India has carried its stories through Patachitra (traditional narrative scroll painting). Unfolded frame by frame and brought to life through Pater Gaan (sung scroll narration), the scroll is both image and performance. Mythology, folklore, history, and contemporary events have entered this visual language.

Anti-Islamic Sentiment in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
By Milo Gladstein @milogphotography

These images were made for a project about the Islamic Society of Tulsa (IST) facing anti-Islam hatred from Broken Arrow city councilors and the mayor. They were taken in the current Mosque in Tulsa and at the city council meeting in Broken Arrow. There are also portraits of people viewing the documents and speaking about their feelings regarding the emails the city received expressing anti-islam sentiments, concerns about building a mosque, and the growth of the Islamic community in the United States.
