Chromeleon Slug / Слизень хромелеон (Chromelimax revelatus)

New media art works 👉 @kuflexlab

The Chromeleon Slug stays nearly invisible on tree bark until it’s disturbed. At a touch it triggers a “color alarm”: microscopic pigment sacs in the skin unfurl, and within seconds the body blooms into a mosaic of bright spots. This burst of color startles birds and predatory beetles while signaling its inedible slime. After the “flash,” the chromeleon picks up speed and slips into a darker spot, gradually fading and blending back into the bark.

(Evernia phantasma)

Check our interactive works @kuflexlab

It’s a symbiosis of an insect and a lichen. It’s very hard to make out any familiar insect parts: no standard head and no usual leg shapes. It looks entirely like lichen; only its motion gives away that it can move. It lives on old oak and pine twigs and feeds on tiny particles of bark. It repels curious animals with an unusual scent. Very rarely it jumps and can glide up to 17 meters.

(Filix amplexor)

Interactive works 👉 @kuflexlab

A rare species of fern found in the shady forests of the temperate zone. Filix amplexor reacts to the slightest touch by wrapping its fronds around a hand or paw, holding for several seconds. It is believed to feed on warmth and “charge” itself with the emotional energy of the person or animal. Most report a mild surge of joy after the embrace.
///

(Boletus pavidus)

The Phobolote is the only fungus known to science with a hypertrophied instinct for social anxiety. In a resting state, it mimics the common Wood Blewit, but upon tactile contact, its mycelial cords rapidly rearrange into a powerful hydraulic drive. This allows the creature to reach speeds of up to 12 km/h, transforming its cap into an aerodynamic hull. Phobolotes prefer to settle in deep leaf litter of oak and pine needles. They feed primarily on the forest's "forgotten memories" and high-calorie dew, leaving behind a slimy trail with faint anti-magnetic properties that baffle modern navigators.
///

Breaking news from the R&D Division! 🌲🔬
Gearing up for NY '26, we’ve officially wrapped up our latest field tests. We’re ditching digital emulation for an organic quantum substrate: custom-bred forest bio-particles.
Behold the calibration process. The wild particles stay dormant until the operator engages the "Hand" analog interface.
The outcome: Immediate neuro-sync! The swarm locks into a stable "26" formation before a controlled release into the atmosphere.
It’s still glitchy and the particles are moody, but we’ll break them in by 2026. Happy... future! ✨

Shrooper / Шрупер (Boletocursor subitus)

The Shrooper is an extremely twitchy arthropod that perfectly mimics a common bracket fungus to evade forest predators. Its "cap" is actually a high-strength chitinous carapace concealing dozens of hydraulic limbs capable of accelerating the creature to 15 km/h at the slightest bark vibration. Feeding on spores and mites, it prefers busy logs to trigger frequent adrenaline spikes for its frantic metabolism. Upon startle, the Shrooper emits a distinct "pop" sound and vanishes instantly, leaving behind nothing but the scent of old dust. This species spends more energy fleeing imaginary threats than seeking food, turning its existence into one non-stop cardio marathon.
///

(Crotalimax neonus)

The Neon Rattler boasts the loudest defense among slugs. Its acidic coloring serves as a warning. At rest, it appears to be a typical vibrant slug. However, upon contact, a hydraulic reflex is triggered: the head resonators instantly fill with hemolymph, stiffen, and begin to vibrate furiously. It emits a sharp, dry crackle. The vibration is so intense that direct contact causes numbness in predators, forcing them to drop the prey immediately.
///

(Arboropendra)

A bark-mimicking scolopendromorph centipede that hides inside old trees. 20-40 cm long. Expertly camouflages itself as the bark of various species. Creepy-looking but harmless to humans; its nip stings about like nettles. Nocturnal. Feeds on bark beetle larvae and insect pupae, “sanitizing” cracks and slowing wood decay. Leaves a faint scent of wet birch bark and resin. Most often found on very old birches and fallen logs.
///

(Polyporus mycopterus)

A winged polypore. In dry weather it can unfurl the under-cap wings and lift off from the trunk, but usually drops back after flying no farther than 3 meters. By day it passes for an ordinary bracket; at night it trains its wings and roams the forest, moving from tree to tree. Over a season it can cover several dozen kilometers. Inedible.
///

(Pseudocochlea mollis)

A soft-bodied mimic of a snail with a “pseudo-shell.” Outwardly it looks exactly like a common garden snail, but its shell isn’t rigid: it is a skin pouch filled with viscoelastic hydrogel. When touched or squeezed, the casing deforms noticeably and then fully restores its shape within a few seconds. This mechanism protects it from predators: at rest the pseudo-shell appears hard and is mistaken for a normal snail; when threatened, it abruptly releases internal pressure, the shell softens and, like a cushion, absorbs pecks or bites; a layer of slime makes the surface slippery, letting the “snail” slip free. It inhabits damp forest edges and shrubs (often in raspberry thickets), feeding on tender leaves and raspberries.
///

(Jellichenia melliflua)

A rare bark-dwelling mimic that looks like a flat lichen, 2–7 cm across. Touch or a sharp temperature change triggers a two-phase reflex. Phase 1 - “inflation”: subcortical vesicles fill with gel and the disc swells within 4-8 seconds into a white, fungus-like cushion. Phase 2 - “jellyfish”: pigments rapidly break down via a chemical reaction; the body turns amber-transparent and sticky, like warm honey jelly, releasing a floral-yeasty scent irresistible to insects. They land and stick; the medusnik accumulates them for a while, then digests them with external enzymes. After a few hours it collapses back into a thin “crust” lichen. Parasitizes true lichens and causes little harm to the tree. Adheres firmly to skin-safely removed with alcohol or vegetable oil.
///
