Saturday was magical! My first time showing and selling my work was a transformative experience, and I have several people to thank for that: 🌞 My best friend and husband @hah_vee_air_ for pushing and supporting me to focus on my ceramics journey. I love you 😘 🌞 @lotus_claymatter and Tino at @3rdcoastclay, for cultivating an incredible learning environment and community that make it possible for me to practice and grow as an artist! 🌞 My fellow studio members who are the kindest, funniest, most talented people around. They lift each other up and inspire me endlessly. 🌞 My dear friends who reached out and showed up to support me 🫶🏻 To be celebrated by people you love is such a gift! 🌞 Everyone who bought something from me! Thank you thank you for appreciating handmade ceramics and supporting local artists! A better world demands creation, and creation demands love and patience and community. I am going to bask in this feeling and let it fuel me for the work to come! by @sofreh.studio
And that’s a wrap! Our first Homelands Festival was more beautiful than we could have imagined. The festival started with our Family Art Day at @meca_houston, where we had 15 community organizations and artists leading hands on activities, from letter pressing and collage to tea making and calligraphy. Over 150 children and big children (aka adults) spent the afternoon playing, learning, making, and being together on a gorgeous autumn day. A special thank you to @artintheheart.htx @peoples.counsel and @newdisabledsouth for sponsoring and supporting festival programming, including a community teach-in on how we can take care of our communities. We’ll continue sharing photos, reflections, and stories from our inaugural festival over the next few weeks. We can’t wait to do this again. ✨ by @sofreh.studio
Is there a plant that reminds you of home? A tree you grew up under, a flower in your grandmother’s garden, or an herb that your family always had on hand? In LiterNatura!, Alba Sereno brings together literature, plants, and personal geography to explore the landscapes we carry with us. Come write, share stories, and bring seeds or plants to share! 🌱 This workshop is free and all are welcome. Sign up through the link in our bio! by @sofreh.studio
People have been gathering outside to share food for as long as we can remember. Spreading out blankets, eating with our hands, telling stories between bites, insisting someone try just one more thing. Join us as we close out our inaugural Homelands festival week for a picnic potluck. Bring a dish you love, something you’ve been wanting to share, or just yourself. We would love to see you there! 2 pm - Sunset Saturday, October 24 Memorial Park Picnic Loop by @sofreh.studio
Do you ever notice yourself repeating a pattern you swore you’d break? Or following expectations that don’t feel true to who you are? Us too. 🙋🏻‍♀️ Join us for a workshop exploring the stories, beliefs, and habits we inherit from family, culture and community. Through conversations and creative mapping we’ll consider what we want to keep and what we might want to do differently. Free workshop led by Dr. Quỳnh-Hương N. Nguyễn. How do we make sense of grief? How do we hold on to the people, stories, and parts of ourselves we’re afraid of losing? In The Grief We Carry, Kai Moriah Winstead invites us to explore grief, memory, and imagination through computational poetry. Using words, sounds, and personal stories, we’ll experiment with language as a way to make meaning, preserve our histories, and carry something forward. 📝 No poetry or writing experience needed. Everyone is welcome! Free workshop with Kai Moriah Winstead. Sign up through the link in our bio. by @sofreh.studio
Is there someone back home you wish you could write to? A relative you’ve heard stories about but never met? Join us for tea and a handsewing workshop inspired by qiaopi, letters that connected Chinese migrants with loved ones across oceans. We’ll make handmade envelopes to hold the words, memories, and connections we want to carry forward. 🧵 Free workshop with Annie Chyr. Sign up through the link in our bio ❤️ by @sofreh.studio

What does it mean to carry home across oceans, borders, and generations? This workshop, led by Annie Chyr, explores the history of qiaopi (侨批), the letters and money sent home by early Chinese migrants who traveled across Southeast Asia, the Americas, and the Caribbean for work. You will write a letter to an ancestor or loved one you miss, then, using natural linen fabric, you will learn basic stitches to make a fabric envelope pouch that safely holds your letter. No sewing or writing experience is needed, and people from all backgrounds are welcome. You will head home with a completed handmade linen pouch, a meaningful personal letter, and a deeper connection to the journeys that brought us here. Thank you to @fabricforge_htx, our workshop partner and host for this workshop! . . . . This workshop is funded in part by the City of Houston through the @houstonartsalliance for Homelands Festival, produced by Laila Khalili. Register through Eventbrite at the Link in Bio!
