Baby’s first conference 🥹

This child-centered conversation serves as a gathering place to discuss joys and challenges of bringing creative practice to parenting and/or caregiving. With an activity to keep everyone’s hands busy, this facilitated conversation embraces creative strategies, the value of “loose parts” play and material prompts to foster connections. WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO is a two-person exhibition of Casey Sayer Brooks and Nathan Byrne. Each of these artists are attuned to the materiality of their processes as they seek out the immaterial. There is a following along with the work as it comes into being while quietly keeping apace. The paintings and objects are arrived at, much as it is when someone loses and then finds their way, by walking toward a distant sound.

In Casey Sayer Brooks’ paintings, traces of forms emerge in cascading slurries of light and color. Nathan Byrne’s talismanic objects are playful meditations musing upon or hovering around the titular question: which way does the spirit go?

Casey Sayer Brooks @csayerbrooks and Nathan Byrne @byrnenate will be in conversation with artist Amy Sacksteder @amysacksteder_studio about the origins of this exhibition, the artists’ engagement with these bodies of work, the windfalls & beautiful overlaps taking place 🩵

The exhibition runs through June 20th with opens hours 2-5 pm every Saturday and Sunday. There is a closing reception on Saturday 6/20 from 5-8 pm 🔄

The University of Michigan Duderstadt Center Gallery presents “You Next”, a duo exhibition by Thede Ambrose @theodore_ambrose and Kate Donoghue @katedonoghue (@umstamps BFA 22’), curated by Nathan Byrne @byrnenate. This exhibition has been described as “completely unhinged” 🖤

Artifacts, Illusion, and the Speculative mediate the exchange between Thede Ambrose and Kate Donoghue’s practices.

Referencing both personal and found documentary and advertisement imagery, Donoghue investigates the vacuous and hauntingly banal underbelly of commercial aspirations, constructing paintings that collapse expectations of consumerism into innate and corrupted desires.

Ambrose navigates mediated violence, spirituality, and the abject, manifesting in perverse articulations of belief and reality. Imagistic sculpture and installation are generated through an expansive material interest, and an extensive archive of found imagery.

“You Next” presents the collisions of these practices. Cautionary tales, dreams, and fantasies of objectification come to a head in this collaboration between the two artists.

This April, CLUSTER Museum hosts The Grass Grows in the Icebox, curated by Stamps Lecture Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21) and Emily Staugaitis.

Grass Grows in the Icebox explores relationships cultivated by artists working with nonhuman beings, land, and natural materials not as subject or object, but as collaborators. The artists in this exhibition are contemplating the labors of land work, care and attention, ecofeminism, empathy with other-than-human domains, somatic remembering, restoration, and repair. Ruth K. We are excited to announce Phase 2 of the Fore-Site project @umstampsgallery featuring artists: Sally Clegg @sally.clegg & Kim Karlsrud @thecommonstudio ✨✨✨

From September 2025 through August 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based, artist-run project spaces led by @umstamps MFA alumni: @cynkypsi , directed by @sally.clegg and Abhishek Narula @scotchandsolder and @sometimes_space_ypsi , directed by Nathan Byrne @byrnenate. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank @umstampsgallery ✨
.
With Phase 2, artists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form.

“By Means of a Pencil” a solo exhibition by artist and @umstamps Lecturer @byrnenate opened Thursday Oct. 9th @umduderstadt Duderstadt Center Gallery. Thank you everyone who came out for the opening! It has been so wonderful to meet a number of @umstamps classes and colleagues at the exhibition to speak about this body of work and engage in conversation🌹

What does it mean for media to be live? What does it mean to perform? What does it mean to care for another, as opposed to caring with? When does the audience become the performer, and the performer the recipient?

I am honored to present alongside @emersonspillow "to care for ____ , &," a night of durational performance works as part of the larger inaugural Media Live Ypsi performance festival. We asked ourselves: what does performance art look like when it is centered around acts of care rather than feats of endurance? Using the mode of durational performance, or performance in which time is considered as material, presence is honed as craft, the smallest of gestures are seeds, and full awareness takes precedent over perfection.

We are thrilled to be collaborating with 6 artists integrated within the Ypsilanti grassroots art scene. Care finds its roots in community!

Mosey on down to @rac.ypsi this Friday to experience something a little different, a familiar reality gently shifted, 6-9 PM, free of charge. @cynkypsi will be waiting for you the following evening for a fascinating night of collaborative projection and video-based works, from 7-9 PM. Entirely grateful to be a part of this wonderful community. It's going to be a beautiful weekend.

“By Means of a Pencil” brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing, collage, and sculpture.

For years, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.”

Just as it was with Walser, “by means of a pencil” I was able to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually, this became processes like my transcription drawings, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making.

While this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making, language and sculpture, language and longing.

October 10/11 it's the very first MLY (Media Live Ypsi), two evenings of live art for your experiential pleasure!

Media Live Ypsi (MLY) is a two-day live art festival launching in October 2025 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Connecting three project spaces (@sometimes_space_ypsi , @cynkypsi , and @rac.ypsi ), MLY brings together experimental works in audio, video, projection, and performance. The inaugural festival this fall will feature over a dozen artists from Southeast Michigan and beyond between two events.
