Sommer Smith McPherson is a multimedia artist and lighting designer based in Andover, MA who recently was introduced to the practice of group sewing through the Sewing With Anger Project.

“Throughout the process of participating in Sewing With Anger, producing each piece of the quilt allowed for an anecdotal exchange of relatable stories and creative collaboration. Pulling on ancient traditions of female driven sewing circles, bonds were made that are not only shown through stitches, but through unforgettable memories.”

On October 16th, join us for a small and intimate opening reception where we will be in conversations with the artists, curators, and participants of the project. This reception will be followed by a gallery walkthrough from 6-8!

To Sew with Anger is a three part project bringing together 10 women of color across Massachusetts and Rhode Island to reflect on the recitations of self-described “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet” Audre Lorde, and disrupt domination narratives of process, creation, and art making. Since April 2026 we have been convening to discuss Lorde, life, and what exists in between. These conversations and the artworks that have been produced as a result, have culminated in an exhibition which will be on display at the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts at Brown University from October 16-December 6.
