We know every family situation is different.

SonicPhonics was created to help make early phonics learning more accessible, engaging, and supportive for children both at school and at home 📚

Some parents are balancing long work hours, financial pressure, or limited time. Some children are learning English in multilingual households or alongside different accents and language backgrounds 🌏

At the same time, literacy challenges remain a real issue in New Zealand, with around 26% of adults identified as having low literacy proficiency.

Our goal is to support children through repetition, listening, speaking, and interactive sound practice:helping reinforce the same learning happening in classrooms.

We’re incredibly grateful to the teachers and families helping shape SonicPhonics along the way ❤️

Ah, where see manners!
Let us introduce ourselves 🤩

SonicPhonics is an interactive phonics app designed to help children build confidence with letter sounds, early reading, and structured literacy 📚

Through repetition, voice interaction, listening, and engaging activities, students practise the same sounds they are learning in class - helping reinforce classroom teaching in a fun and accessible way.

Perfect for:

✔ Junior classrooms
✔ Structured literacy support
✔ Home practice
✔ Small group learning
✔ Extra reinforcement

Teachers can also create classrooms, track progress, and set student learning levels to match where they are teaching.

Let’s just say, we get you now teachers 😅

We’re currently building our app further, using feedback from our beloved teachers and anonymous data from 50,000 written letters on our app!

We’ve had our fair share of eyebrow raises as we see children writing and doodling words that look so different from what we teach! But we’re taking that as feedback and coming up with something more fun, helpful, and that actually works 👀👀👀

What can 50,000 handwritten "m"s teach us?

Quite a lot, it turns out.

As we analysed thousands of handwriting attempts, we found patterns that went far beyond whether a child got the letter "right" or "wrong".

We could see:

✏️ where children naturally paused,
📏 common size differences,
〰️ repeated formation patterns,
✅ and what successful letter formation looked like across thousands of learners.

But we didn't stop there.

We're now using this unique dataset to build a handwriting model trained specifically on children's handwriting.

Unlike traditional handwriting recognition, which focuses on identifying what letter has been written, we're teaching our model to understand how well the letter has been formed.

To do that, we carefully grouped thousands of similar handwritten "m"s and labelled them as:

• complete
• incomplete
• well formed
• developing
• incorrect

It's like our 'quality control'.

That means future feedback can become more accurate, more encouraging, and more helpful for young learners.

And perhaps most exciting of all...

The more we learn about how children naturally write, the better we can design activities, instruction, and feedback that meet them where they are.

Because every handwriting attempt isn't just an answer.

It's an opportunity to learn.

💬 We'd love to know! What handwriting insight would you find most valuable as a teacher? by @sonicphonicsapp

We'd even say that learning is more fun in the holidays 😆

Oooooooh! Don't forget our SonicPhonics Teacher Tool 👀

While students are building their literacy skills in the app, teachers can access powerful insights behind the scenes.

✅ Monitor student progress
✅ Identify learning gaps
✅ Track letter sounds, blending, reading, and handwriting
✅ Support targeted teaching decisions

Built to complement classroom instruction and give teachers greater visibility into every learner's journey.

Because effective literacy support starts with knowing exactly where students need help. 💛

Too often, students are left to practise the wrong letter formation pathways before anyone can step in. ✏️

That’s why immediate corrective feedback matters so much.

At Sonic Phonics, we’re helping teachers feel confident that students are being accurately scaffolded from the very beginning..

Especially during independent practice. No guessing. No reinforcing incorrect habits. Just clear guidance, instant feedback, and stronger foundations for writing success. 💛

“Your tool gives me confidence”
— Teacher feedback we’ll never get tired of hearing.

"Students are actually asking to do their phonics."

That's the kind of feedback we love hearing ❤️

Teachers tell us that Sonic Phonics helps students stay engaged, build confidence with letter sounds, and work more independently while they focus on small groups.

When classroom phonics practice matches what's being taught that week, students get more opportunities to reinforce their learning and make progress at their own pace.

Thank you to the amazing teachers sharing how they're using Sonic Phonics in their classrooms. Your feedback helps us continue building tools that genuinely support both teachers and learners.

It’s about time we showed you real results from teachers who are enjoying SonicPhonics 🙌

Seeing classrooms across NZ using SonicPhonics during literacy time has honestly been the coolest part of this journey.

Here are a few similar words from Rebekah using it in her own classrooms 👇

"I stand by my words for sure and as a school we are happy to have our name in the frame"

"I finally have been given control to update the iPads as needed. With this app it is going to be so worth it!"

Try for yourself and your schools, teachers! Flick us a DM 🤩✅ by @sonicphonicsapp
