Understanding WHY your serger works the way it does is what builds REAL confidence with your machine! 🎁 BONUS 6: STOP buying FOUR matching cones of every decorative thread! 🧵 Want to make a QUILT with your SERGER? You’re in the right place! 🤯✂️ Yes, you can take those fabric scraps you’ve been saving and turn them into a beautiful QUILT using your serger! Here are 3 tips to get you started: 1. 🧵 START WITH SCRAPS! Grab some leftover quilting cotton and practice piecing them together with your serger. You’ll be amazed at how quickly those scraps turn into something beautiful! 2. ✂️ THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX! Your serger can stitch, trim, and piece fabric in one step! It’s a completely different approach to traditional quilting, and that’s what makes it so much FUN! 3. 💡 KEEP AN OPEN MIND! Is serger quilting for EVERYBODY? Nope! But if you already own a serger, why not take advantage of the modern technology and discover what ELSE your machine can do? 👋 Hi, if we haven’t met, I’m Sookie, a serger coach—and sergers are ALL I teach! 🤯🧵 Think you NEED a sewing machine to piece a quilt? THINK AGAIN! Your serger can do SO much more than finish raw edges…and YES, that includes piecing quilt blocks with an accurate ¼” seam allowance! 📏✂️ 👋 Hi, if we haven’t met, I’m Sookie, your Serger Coach—and sergers are ALL I teach! With over 25 years of teaching experience, I help sewists learn the WHAT and WHY behind every stitch, no matter their serger’s make or model! 💡 Here’s what you need to know: 🧵 4-Thread Overlock: Your serger stitches AND trims in one step! The trick is understanding your stitch width, fabric placement, and how much fabric your blade removes to achieve that accurate ¼” seam. 📏 Chainstitch: If your machine has a chainstitch option, you can piece quilt blocks WITHOUT trimming the fabric! Simply establish your ¼” seam allowance using the needle position and a fabric guide. ✂️ PRO TIP: ALWAYS stitch a test seam, press it, and measure your seam allowance BEFORE piecing all those beautiful quilt blocks! 💛 Now, here’s where YOU come in! Quilting with a serger is different from traditional quilting, and that’s exactly why I LOVE teaching it! I’m looking for sewists who are OPEN-MINDED, CURIOUS, and EXCITED to explore what their sergers can do! You don’t have to give up traditional quilting or change the way you’ve always sewn. Just be willing to try something NEW! Because sometimes the most exciting discoveries happen when we stop asking WHY and start asking WHY NOT?! 🙌 🎥 Ready to give serger quilting a try? I’ve created a FREE 5-PART Quilt With a Serger YouTube series PLUS a FREE 25-PAGE downloadable companion guide! You’ll learn everything from accurate ¼” seams and piecing techniques to quilting with your serger and attaching binding with fusible thread! 💬 Comment QUILT and make sure you’re following me! 🤯🧵 This is the THIRD adjustment most sewists overlook, and when combined with TWO other settings, it can help create beautiful gathers WITHOUT a gathering foot! It’s my 3-PART SERGER GATHERING HACK, and it’s one of my favorite ways to create fuller gathers using your STANDARD presser foot! ✂️ 👋 Hi, if we haven’t met, I’m Sookie, your Serger Coach—and sergers are ALL I teach! I teach all makes and models, helping sewists understand WHAT their serger does and WHY! 💡 Here’s how it works: 📏 STEP 1: INCREASE your differential feed! Turn it to the highest setting, typically 2.0. This makes the front feed dogs move more fabric toward the needles than the back feed dogs move away, encouraging the fabric to gather. 🧵 STEP 2: LENGTHEN your stitch length! Set your stitch length to its longest setting. Longer stitches can help encourage fuller gathers. ✂️ STEP 3: INCREASE your presser foot pressure! THIS is the adjustment so many sewists overlook! Increasing the pressure can help the feed dogs grip and move the fabric more effectively, encouraging additional gathers when combined with the first TWO settings! ✨ THREE adjustments, ONE standard presser foot, and NO specialty gathering foot required! Of course, every fabric behaves differently, so ALWAYS test on scraps and fine-tune your settings! After 25+ years of teaching sergers, I LOVE showing my students how much their machines can do with just a few simple adjustments! 💛 🎥 Want to see these techniques in ACTION? I’ve created TWO FREE full-length YouTube gathering tutorials where I demonstrate gathering WITH and WITHOUT a specialty gathering foot, plus additional tips and techniques to help you get beautiful results! 💬 Comment YOUTUBE and make sure you’re following me! I’ll send you the links to BOTH FREE step-by-step gathering videos so you can see exactly how these adjustments work and start creating beautiful gathers with YOUR serger! 💾 Save this for your next gathering project and follow me for more serger tips, tricks, and techniques! 🧵✂️ #SookieSews #SergerCoach #SergerTips #SergerBasics #SueOvery by @sookiesews
💬 Comment FAVS and make sure you’re following me for more serger tips, tools, and organization ideas! I’ll send you my favorite serger tools plus my Amazon serger favorites. 🧵✂️💗 I should have done this years ago! 🤦‍♀️ My serger tools, accessories, needles, tweezers, clips, and gadgets always seemed to be scattered across my sewing table and counters. So when I found this cute pink rolling cart for less than $20, I decided to give it a try…and wow! 💗 Not only does it hold all of my favorite serger tools and accessories, but it still has room left over. It even holds my serger extension table! Everything is now in one place, easy to find, easy to grab, and easy to put away when I’m finished stitching. For less than $20, this may be one of my favorite sewing room upgrades yet. ✨ Save this 💾 for future sewing room inspiration and tell me…how do you store your serger tools? by @sookiesews
The rolled hem is a tiny stitch with big impact—when set up correctly, it turns raw edges into something beautiful 🧵💛 1️⃣ Thread choice matters – Use regular serger thread in the needle + lower looper, and a fuller thread (like wooly poly) in the upper looper for a beautiful, filled edge. 2️⃣ Needle position – Switch to the right needle only. This narrows the stitch width and creates that delicate rolled look. 3️⃣ Tensions – Typically: right needle around 3–4, upper looper 3–5, and lower looper high (7+). Always test on scraps because every fabric behaves differently. 4️⃣ Stitch length – Shorten to around 1–1.5. This packs the thread in tightly and gives that lovely satin-like edge. 5️⃣ Cut width – Narrow it down to 5 (or less if your machine allows). Too wide and it won’t roll neatly, too narrow and it may curl or fray. ✨ Remember: practice on scraps of your actual project fabric—rolled hems look different on sheers, cottons, and knits! Here’s the exact setup I used to achieve my perfect rolled hem: •Right needle tension → 3.5 •Upper looper tension → 4 (with Fluffy Bee / Wonderfil SoftLoc™) •Lower looper tension → 7.5 (with regular serger thread) •Stitch length → 1.5 •Differential feed → 1 (neutral) •Width → 5 💛 👉 Type NAPKIN in the comments and I’ll send you my Rolled Hem Napkin Cheat Sheet 🧵 — a quick guide to perfect hems every time, so you can stitch napkins like a pro ✨. #SueOVery #SookieSews #SergerCoach #YearOfTheSerger #SergerEscape by @sookiesews
