calm down in a diary - single movement work for string quartet

calm down in a diary is based on the painting of the same name by david salle, completed in 1982. a diptych, the painting is composed on two canvases joined together. historically, diptychs were two hinged panels of wood that could be closed like a book and were often associated with the church, serving as altarpieces. in the context of this piece, the book aspect of the diptych acts as a diary, and aims to capture the feelings experienced while keeping a regular journal. often mundane and repetitive, the material reflects the meditative state that can be reached when writing. in other places, ideas spring out of nowhere, disrupting the peace. the piece also has a relation to prayer, another form of meditation that can yield both pensive and provocative responses.

this is just the first two minutes of a 12 minute work- more to come!

dreadnought

'harmonic' is the fourth miniature from my 'dreadnought' collection. this movement uses the notes derived from lightly touching the 5th, 7th and 12th frets across each string in standard tuning to form a pitch collection.

dreadnought

'barre' is the third miniature from my 'dreadnought' collection. this movement is inspired by barre chords on a guitar, therefore every chord in this movement is in parallel motion, constructed from the same intervals of a guitar's standard tuning.
