standing next to “Soft Machine” @aptstudiosgallery last summer✨of all the painting I made last year I think this one best conveys the period of growth and transformation I went through during my second year in London. After years of holding so much tension in my body I finally let myself soften and in that I found so much creative freedom. It sounds cheesy and cliche but I came home to myself and it’s so peaceful here✨ by @sophiavignewelsh

Thank you so much to everyone who came to see the exhibition and engaged with our paintings. It was such a pleasure to share the space with my friend, painter, fellow @clydehopkinsartist awardee @bethcowey ,and to show how our work has developed since graduating from the RCA last year.

The award allowed me the time and space to think, feel, experiment, spiral, resolve etc etc. away from the pressures of the institution. During what was probably the most tumultuous time of my life, this studio became a safe haven in which I could heal and rebuild through painting, the only way I know how.

Special thanks to my wonderful mentor @davidwebbpaintings for the invaluable chats and guidance over the past few months🩵

And another big thanks and love to my wonderful painter friend @jemima_moore_ who saw this body of work in its very early stages and said that it did not seem to be about heartbreak but about freedom🫂👩🏼‍🎨

“Circling in Different Spheres” explores interconnectedness, balance and the shifting spaces between people, memory and time. I began this painting on the autumn equinox and completed it on the full moon with the changing lunar cycle becoming part of its process and rhythm.
Constructed from a hand-built stretcher incorporating a portal and a second layer of canvas, the painting creates two distinct planes through which colour and energy appear to move inward and outward.
The title reflects the idea that we can move through closely connected spheres without ever quite meeting until a moment of serendipity shifts the space between us.

I painted Slow Dance at the start of the summer when everything had turned so beautifully technicolour green. This was my first summer living back in Ireland and I was enamoured with the green all around me. I would go for walks and constantly stop to stare at the sunlight illuminating all of the various sumptuous shades of life giving green. Sunlight and shadows slow dancing together amongst the foliage. High off the green.

a beautiful day in the countryside ✨🪄 ✨ by @sophiavignewelsh

Floating Out Here is a tiny painting about the absurd vastness of our existence: all of us together, suspended on this rock as it moves through space. It’s a meditation on infinity, interconnectedness and our place within the universe. Painting is cool because yes, I can fit that all into a 20x16cm piece of canvas. To quote David Byrne “And you may ask yourself, “Well, how did I get here?”” ⁉️

.

Super nice surprise to hear that Floating Out Here will be included in @artriddler upcoming Speakeasy Arts exhibition November 5th - 8th✨
Secret Location👀 Absurdity is necessary in these times🌀
