POSTS STORIES REELS

Sophie Heutink (1998, The Netherlands)

Originating from her own environment and fascination by old myths and stories, Sophie’s work takes shape while researching, reading and listening. Comparable to an old photo, she manages to capture a collective story, memory or feeling in a very still but impactful manner. Creating contemporary narratives of old tales, hinting at what went before and might still come after through symbolism.

For the Full:Filled show Sophie presents a multidisciplinary artwork which evolves around an invented myth, focusing on the transformative potential of rage. In this myth, suppression of rage leads to physical transmutation of the body. We listen to a character who shares her experience of change happening on the inside and outside. While listening we get to feel the texture of a quilted blanket, which is historically meant for physical protection of harmful objects. Sophie creates a theatrical tension between the duality of our current society and the fragmentations between its people. Themes like vulnerability, discomfort and warmth are all found strongly in this work. Combining the audio with the quilt blanket poetically summarizes all the different fragments of this installation.

New work (in progress)! 1/3

Back to making tile-stamps.
Researching new locations and textual matter, appointing significance and such.

Currently reading about the land as pedagogy, originating from my thesis research question on human alienation from the material world.

Ps: might post some snippets of my thesis readings/writings (I have to read a lottt;))

Exhibition at @de_bouwput with my tutorgroup @factsandfiction_bear ! ✨

Last week tuesday I performed my work once more for our group exhibition in De Bouwput, an exhibition space in Broedplaats Bouw, Amsterdam.
On invitation of our guest tutor @peimsloot we organised a beautiful installation of all our brought works.
I am very proud and happy to have had this possibility!

Here some nice pictures of me performing (in Christmas colors!?)

Aaand upcoming: I’m working on new stuff that’s really exciting! Will be posting soon :)

Moving image of the latest posts on the performance work.

Lately I’m working on artistic research (thesis) causing me to be less active in posting. I decided to gradually share this evolving research as well when it’s more matured!

Stay tuned and enjoy this reel :) by @sophiemaakt

Another detail of my performance!

Autumn holiday gives me time to re-think this work. Today I thought of presenting it on screen displaying two videos (diptych/tweeluik) of the performance simultaneously since I found some footage. The footage contains very detailed sound generated by the paper and my body whilst performing. Quite excited to work further on this one!

Maybe I will share it…? :)

As promised: some in-depth on my latest performance!
This work shows vulnerability and temporality. An attempt to visualize time in space by a printed conversation. Materializing time by presenting a cut-out of it with a definite start. The end has yet to be determined in the future. It is printed on thermal paper, which means the conversation won’t last forever and will fade with time. A perfect metaphor to display temporality.
It is an on-going work, and has multiple ‘parts’;
the real conversation, the performance with the printed version and the final convo-pile.

Materials used: thermal paper, ink, scrap metal.

New week, more work. Here’s part 2!
This ceramic tablet is imprinted by the abstract typography stamps shown in my last post. It weaves together the three entities of time (past, present, future) by being a future relic imprinted with the Dutch word ‘terwijl’ (whilst).

This work is sized 60x30cm and is installed on 3 bricks.
Materials used: clay, ceramic stamps, bricks. by @sophiemaakt
