Bringing some cinema history into the studio

Remember THX? Yes, that loud riser that used to play at the beginning of movies.

This is an original Synthesis TWO THX certified sound system designed by LUCASARTS Entertainment (George Lucas) in collaboration with JBL and it weighs in at over 400lbs! Designed in the 90’s, this would have cost a whopping $25,000.00 give or take.

In the 80’s, George Lucas hired Tomlinson Holman to research and perfect theater audio because at the time it was really bad. This led to the birth of THX (Tomlinson Holman eXperiment): high fidelity audio reproduction standards. Think of this as the blueprint for room acoustics, and hardware that is failsafe and can reliably produce immersive playback standards without breaking a sweat (speaker frequency range, head room, SPL, etc.) these standards helped theaters and engineers design rooms and choose speakers that would make playback in theaters more consistent, reliable and immersive. The synthesis systems were one of the few sound systems at the time that met these standards and was readily available to both professionals and consumers in the ultra niche audio file community.

I plan on using these bad ass speakers for client demos and quality assurance checks during final playback before sending film mixes off to theaters. taken in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by @citylightscinematography
