Sometimes it takes someone visiting from out of state to remind you just how beautiful the South Bay really is. We took a friend visiting from Wisconsin for a sunset drive through the hills of Palos Verdes, home to some of the most incredible coastal views in Southern California. As we made our way down the winding roads, taking in the coastline and the setting sun, our friend couldn’t help but pull out their phone and start filming. For those of us who live here, it’s easy to get accustomed to views like these. What feels like an ordinary drive to us can be an unforgettable experience for someone seeing it through fresh eyes. And sometimes, seeing the South Bay through someone else’s perspective is all it takes to remind us how fortunate we are to call this place home. If you had to take an out-of-town friend to one spot for the best views of the South Bay, where would you go? #southbay #torrance #losangeles #redondobeach #palosverdes by @south.baylife
If you grew up in the area, you probably remember when this place actually felt alive. Now it’s quiet, half-empty, and honestly a little surreal to walk through. South Bay people, what store or memory do you still associate with this mall? #losangeles #southbay #redondobeach #manhattanbeach #hermosabeach by @south.baylife

El Segundo’s growing sports presence just got an unexpected development. The LA Sparks are preparing to establish a permanent training headquarters in the South Bay, bringing basketball operations, player development, and recovery under one roof. The facility will feature two regulation basketball courts, hydrotherapy suites, an outdoor recovery pool, dedicated rest areas, and wellness spaces. The ownership news comes after Mark Walter sold his stake in the LA Lakers earlier this year, raising questions about what could come next for the Sparks. For South Bay residents, it’s worth noting that this is a private training facility, not a public basketball arena. The Sparks will continue playing their home games at Crypto.com Arena. No buyer has been confirmed, and no construction delay has been announced in connection with the reported sale. As El Segundo continues attracting professional sports organizations, should future development include more facilities that local residents can use? Send this to someone who follows South Bay sports. Sources: Bloomberg via Los Angeles Times, LA Sparks, City of El Segundo.#southbay #torrance #losangeles #elsegundo #manhattanbeach by @south.baylife
Sometimes you get so caught up in everyday life that you forget to appreciate what’s right in front of you. But somewhere in the middle of all that, there’s a moment that reminds you why the South Bay is such a special place to call home. It’s the familiar streets, the local businesses you’ve supported for years, the communities you’ve grown attached to, and the memories you’ve made along the way. Some people spend their entire lives hoping to live somewhere like this. Others have called it home for decades. And while life here isn’t always easy, there are still plenty of moments that make you stop and appreciate where you are. What’s one place in the South Bay that always reminds you how lucky we are to live here? #southbay #torrance #redondobeach #losangeles #manhattanbeach by @south.baylife
There’s something about living near the coast that puts things into perspective. Between work, traffic, responsibilities, and everything else going on, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily routine. But having the beach just a short drive or walk away is something you never want to take for granted. And while the South Bay has its share of frustrating days, it’s hard to complain when an ordinary evening can end with a view like this. No reservations, no plans, no money spent. Sometimes the best part of your day is simply showing up at the beach at the right time. What’s your go-to South Bay spot when you need to clear your head? Send this to someone who needs a little beach time. #southbay #losangeles #torrance #hermosabeach #redondobeach by @south.baylife
November is packed with South Bay events, and there are plenty of reasons to get out and explore your local community this month. The first weekend alone brings everything from snow play and cultural celebrations to a beer festival and a dinosaur exhibit. Later in the month, Carson will open a time capsule dating back to 1976, Santa is scheduled to arrive by helicopter in Torrance, and several annual holiday traditions return. A few things to know before making plans: Some events are free, while others require paid admission or advance registration. Snow Play and Santa Day costs $30 per child, and Terranea’s tree lighting requires advance tickets. Check with individual organizers for current schedules and availability. Save this calendar to reference throughout November, and send it to someone you’d like to make plans with. Are there any South Bay events we missed? Share them in the comments so others can check them out. #southbay #losangeles #torrance #manhattanbeach #hermosabeach by @south.baylife
Some of the biggest names in the NBA and NFL attended high schools right here in the South Bay, and a few of their stories might surprise you. One future NBA Hall of Famer nearly got cut from his high school varsity basketball team. Another scored 51 points against Carson in 2006 before eventually becoming an NBA MVP. On the football side, two became members of Super Bowl championship teams, while another earned three Pro Bowl selections during his NFL career. From Inglewood and Lawndale to Gardena, Harbor City and the Palos Verdes Peninsula, these schools have produced athletes who went on to accomplish some remarkable things. And this is only a small sample of the professional talent connected to South Bay high schools over the years. Which school or athlete deserves a spot in Part 2? #southbay #losangeles #gardena #palosverdes #hawthorne by @south.baylife
There’s something about the South Bay that’s hard to explain until you’ve spent enough time here. It’s the familiar streets, the neighborhood spots you’ve been visiting for years, the ocean views that somehow never get old, and the little things you start to appreciate as part of your everyday routine. And while the coastline gets much of the attention, it’s the people, neighborhoods, local businesses, and memories made along the way that give this area its character. Every part of the South Bay has its own personality, and everyone has a different reason for feeling connected to it. For those who grew up here, those who moved here, and even those who have since moved away, what’s one thing about the South Bay that will always stay with you? #southbay #palosverdes #losangeles #redondobeach #torrance by @south.baylife
For nearly 53 years, Admiral Risty was a familiar destination for special occasions in Palos Verdes. Opened in 1966 at Golden Cove Shopping Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, the restaurant was founded by Ralph Wood Jr. and named after his wife, Barbara “Risty” Wood. Known for its steak and seafood, ocean views, and nautical decor, Admiral Risty became a popular destination for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and family dinners. Generations of South Bay residents celebrated milestones here, with some employees spending decades at the restaurant. On August 17, 2019, Admiral Risty closed after its owners were unable to reach an agreement on a new lease. In the weeks leading up to its closure, reservations filled as longtime customers returned for one final meal. Today, a Chase Bank occupies the former restaurant building at 31250 Palos Verdes Drive West. Do you remember dining at Admiral Risty? What stands out most about your visits? #southbay #losangeles #palosverdes #redondobeach #torrance by @south.baylife
You’ve probably purchased products from some of these brands without realizing they have offices or headquarters right here in the South Bay. Beyond Meat, known for its plant-based meat alternatives, has its corporate headquarters in El Segundo. Liquid I.V., the popular electrolyte hydration brand, also has an office in the city, along with SmartyPants Vitamins, known for its gummy vitamins and supplements. Interestingly, Liquid I.V. and SmartyPants Vitamins share the same parent company, Unilever. In Torrance, Health-Ade operates out of the city, bringing another recognizable name to the South Bay through its kombucha products. And then there’s Belkin, the company behind phone chargers, cables, and other technology accessories, which has its global headquarters in El Segundo. Which of these brands surprised you the most? Share this with someone from the South Bay. #southbay #elsegundo #torrance #redondobeach #losangeles by @south.baylife
The Portuguese Bend Landslide has been moving for 70 years, and the effects are still visible every time you drive this stretch of Palos Verdes Drive South. The landslide was reactivated in 1956 during Los Angeles County’s extension of Crenshaw Boulevard. It has remained active ever since, becoming one of the largest continuously active landslides in the U.S. The movement continuously shifts and cracks this section of road, and Rancho Palos Verdes says it spends about $1 million each year resurfacing it. Following the historic winter rains of 2022-23 and 2023-24, land movement accelerated dramatically across the greater landslide complex, damaging homes, roads, utilities and other infrastructure. Some homes were red or yellow tagged, and residents in affected neighborhoods lost utility service. Movement has slowed substantially since its peak, but it has not stopped. As of October 2026, the City still describes properties in the Greater Portuguese Bend Landslide Area as severely affected by ongoing movement. FEMA has now awarded the City more than $54 million toward voluntary buyouts involving 27 pre-selected properties. Surrounding Portuguese Bend, you’ll also find rolling hills, steep canyons and views of the Pacific, a striking contrast with the unstable ground beneath parts of the area. If you’ve driven through Portuguese Bend, you’ve driven through a South Bay story that is still changing today. Know someone who’s driven this road? Send this to them. #southbay #losangeles #torrance #palosverdes #redondobeach by @south.baylife
