Mary, but make it Maya?

There's something about Thalia Gochez's 'Maya' (2024) that feels perfectly timed for Halloween. A young woman dressed in black, an unexpected flash of orange framing her head, and a crucifix hanging above her. The reference to traditional religious portraiture is hard to miss. But this isn't quite the Madonna you remember.

We're down to the final day of HONEY, Thalia Gochez's photographic exhibition at The Space@Icon. And Halloween is your last chance to see it in person.

🗓️ Saturday, October 31
🕛 12 Noon – 5 PM
📍 The Space@Icon Gallery

If Maya has caught your eye, come see the photograph up close. And if you're thinking about adding a little contemporary photographic art to your walls, ask us about purchasing the work.

After October 31, HONEY closes. Don't let this one get away.

“Mama and Mija” (2022), by photographer Thalia Gochez
A moment that challenges the usual picture of motherhood.

Pink feathers, braids, gold hoops, a classic lowrider-style car. There's a whole sense of style and cultural identity here. But look a little closer. The way she holds her daughter brings an entirely different kind of presence to the photograph.

It's a portrait of motherhood that doesn't leave youth, individuality, or self-expression at the door.

Part of HONEY, Thalia Gochez's photographic exhibition at The Space@Icon, 'Mama and Mija' is one of the works we're highlighting as the exhibition approaches its final days.

What caught your eye first: the pink, the car, or the connection between mother and daughter?

At first glance, 'Assist 'by Dominique Oliveto feels playful: two figures in matching track jackets, a soccer ball held between them, bouquets replacing faces. But the longer you look, the more complicated the picture becomes.

Created as part of Oliveto’s series "What's the Score", the work explores the space where fashion and sport collide—and the often contradictory roles women are asked to navigate: support and competition, individuality and belonging, and visibility and anonymity.

The title, 'Assist', shifts the conversation. In sports, an assist is the play that makes the goal possible. It rarely receives the same attention as the score itself. Here, Oliveto turns that idea into a portrait of sisterhood: the people who help shape us, challenge us, protect us, and occasionally compete with us.

The bouquets obscure identity, but they also become a form of expression. Wild, imperfect, and impossible to control.

For collectors, it’s the kind of photograph that reveals something new every time you live with it.

Available sizes:
• 30 × 20.75 in
• 40 × 27 in
• 60 × 41 in
• 70 × 48 in
Assist is available in a limited edition through The Space@Icon on Artsy.

The Quiet Discipline - 'At the Barre' by Kanya Iwana

Most photographs of ballet focus on performance.

Kanya Iwana's 'At The Barre' focuses on everything that comes before it.

The waiting. The adjustments. The concentration. The moments between movements that audiences never see.

Six young dancers occupy the frame, each absorbed in a different ritual of preparation. A shoe is tightened. A stretch is held. A gaze drifts inward. Together, they form a portrait not just of ballet, but of discipline itself.

What makes At The Barre compelling is its restraint. The photograph avoids spectacle and instead finds beauty in observation. The expansive negative space, the monochromatic palette, and the subtle variations in posture create a composition that feels as contemporary as it does timeless.

For collectors building interiors that blend photography, fashion, and design, this is the kind of image that rewards living with it. Every viewing reveals a new gesture, a new relationship between the figures, a new detail within the quiet choreography of the scene.

Limited edition prints available in:
• 9 × 12 inches
• 20 × 25 inches
• 32 × 40 inches

Why do some photographs hold your attention longer than others?

Part of the answer is right here: the diptych.

With a single image, your eye can take in the information and move on. A diptych asks something different. It creates a conversation between two photographs, forcing your attention to travel back and forth, comparing details, expressions, gestures, and emotions.

In 'Sasha Diptych 5', Zamar Velez pairs two very different encounters with the same subject. On the left, Sasha holds a black cat, the frame alive with movement, personality, and a sense of intimacy. On the right, the cat disappears and the dynamic shifts. What remains is a direct portrait—quiet, open, and almost conversational in its simplicity.

The longer you look, the more questions emerge: Does the cat change how you read Sasha's expression? Does one image feel more vulnerable than the other?
Which photograph did you look at first?

Collectors often talk about living with art that continues to reveal itself over time. That's one reason photographers return to the diptych format again and again: it rewards repeated viewing.

And in a world designed for fast scrolling, work that slows us down can feel surprisingly rare.
