When you buy your candle from us, you buy more than a candle. You’re investing in the lives of young men with periods of incarceration. Every 9 oz or 14 oz candle sold provides an hour of employment to these guys.

At Spír exclusively employ young men with periods of incarceration to make our candles — providing jobs, mentorship, and a space to breathe so they can have the best opportunity to become who they aspire to be.

We believe doing something is better than nothing. In this case, that something is buying a candle. Thank you.

🎥 Thank you to @jason.c.lewis with @getthemanual for directing and producing this!

Spir Foundation Annual Fundraiser: Beyond Employment
Tomorrow | 6–9 PM

Still time to grab a ticket. We’d love to see you there. ❤️ by @spircandleco

This Saturday, Market Street Shoes is proud to contribute 10% of sales to one of our favorite neighbors raising funds to support the work they do alongside young men rebuilding their lives after incarceration. The Spir Foundation has provided more than 15,000 hours of employment to 70 young men, built lasting relationships, and learned an important lesson: a job alone isn’t enough.
The Spir Foundation exists to provide the wraparound support young men need to thrive and become the best version of who they already are. Through mentorship, community, and holistic support, we’re helping create pathways to stability, purpose, and opportunity.

Please come shop with us and help us raise money for Spir to continue investing in the young men they serve through mentorship, community, and wraparound support while laying the foundation for even greater impact in the years ahead.

I don’t talk about this part of my life here nearly enough. I think I need to change that. It’s not that it’s a secret or anything. It’s just easier to post a picture of one of my kids playing soccer than it is to describe what I do.

I work with young men who are nearing the end of their sentences and preparing to return home. They have their whole lives ahead of them, but the paths available to them are full of obstacles. Through SPÍR, we provide paid work, structure, training and a community of people who believe in them. Employment and economic autonomy are essential, but belonging is the deeper goal.

I love this work. I hope I can do it forever.

But the longer I do it, the clearer it becomes: these young men need more than a job.

They need case management. Help building résumés and applying for other jobs. Connections to school. Peer mentors. People who will continue showing up after they return home. A sense of belonging. The list is so long that the challenge isn’t finding ways to help; it’s deciding what to prioritize.

That’s why we started the Spir Foundation.

When the future feels discouraging, it can be tempting to shut down. The antidote to apathy is to show up somewhere that gives you an opportunity to do something with that concern. When you get close to the people most acutely affected by society’s challenges, it becomes nearly impossible not to want to do something.

So I’m asking you to show up with us this Saturday. For them. For me. But also for you.

I think you want to do something positive with your concern for the future. I’m not making an ask so much as inviting you to do what I think you already want to do: be helpful.

My promise is that if you come, you’ll leave feeling encouraged, inspired and more hopeful than when you arrived.

Do you feel optimistic about the future?

I hope you do. But if not, you’re not alone. Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they don’t feel optimistic about what’s ahead (Yale study). And why would they? We’re inundated with information and stories that make concern feel like the only reasonable response.

But those stories rarely show us the people all around us—in our neighborhoods and communities—actively working for the good of others. They’re organizing food drives, investing in marginalized communities, entering uncomfortable spaces and sitting with people in pain.

They usually aren’t doing it loudly. But they are inviting us to join them.

If you’re feeling discouraged, fearful, worried or anxious, the antidote may be to show up.

When you feel sluggish, it’s easier to lie on the couch. But that rarely helps. You have to walk, lift some weights or do some yoga. Feelings follow actions—not the other way around.

So if you’re worried about the future, show up somewhere that allows you to do something with that concern.

This Saturday is our second annual Spir Foundation Fundraiser. Yes, the goal is to raise money. But my promise is that if you come, you’ll leave feeling encouraged and hopeful.

In just under one month we have our annual fundraiser. I have a lot to say about it, but…I think I’ll wait until we get a bit closer.

But for now, let me say this.

I think people are desperate for meaning. For opportunities to contribute. To step outside of their keyboards and into environments where they’ll be inspired and encouraged.

There’s never a shortage of galas and fundraisers you can choose to attend. And there are so many causes worth your time and attention.

What I can promise you is this: when you attend our fundraiser, you’ll leave feeling better about the world — and better about your ability to do something that matters.

I hope you come.
