turkey vulture//art nouveau inspired gateway for Tay 🖤

I have a special love and fascination for vultures, and am going to share some of my nerdy ramblings about them below:

New world vultures are the family Carthartidae - from the Greek carthartes, or “purifier”
There are seven species in this family. Among these new world vultures, some can detect prey by smell, which is unusual for raptors, their close relatives within the bird world. One species of old world vulture, the bearded vulture, is especially adapted to eating bones.

There is convergent evolution between old world vultures and new world vultures, meaning that they are not very closely related, but separately evolved to form a similar ecological function in the web of life. Outside of the ocean, vultures are the only “obligate scavengers,” or the only vertebrates that primarily or entirely consume carrion - no wonder they loom so large as a symbol of death/rebirth. Vultures are known to be patient, observing other predators hunt and take down their prey, then moving into feed when it is their time. Vultures have especially powerful stomach acids that can digest (thus removing from the environment) harmful bacteria that would be dangerous to other scavengers (anthrax, rabies). Vultures serve an important function of keeping down pests and diseases by competing for carcasses - they actually protect us.

The vulture’s ability to transform death into life has made it into a powerful symbol of rebirth, transformation, and purification in many cultures across time. Ancient Egyptians believed that all vultures were female, born from eggs without the intervention of a male (Jesus style). They were compared to the Virgin Mary by early Christian authors. The oldest known artistic representation of a vulture is 11,000 years old, at Gobekli Tepe in turkey (which is perhaps the oldest remaining human built temple).

A group of vultures flying is called a kettle.
A group of vultures perched in a tree is called a committee.
A group of vultures feeding is called a wake.
