top 3 highlights of 2025 (2/3)

launching my website, instagram, & monogram

when i started my creative writing journey 7y ago, having a social media or “public”presence was the last thing on my mind.

i was recovering from burnout. i studied journalism in college and while the education was incredible, writing articles felt repetitive. it was the era of fake news, echo chambers, listicles, 24h news cycles. i felt like i was part of an industrial machine that lacked the heart and integrity that made me want to go into journalism in the first place.

when i began taking creative writing classes, my only goal was to repair my relationship with writing. i wanted to write what i loved and interested me, to grapple with the things i didn’t yet understand about life. i wanted to be honest—brutally honest—and to make sense of the contradictory truths and nonsensical realities the “real world” seemed to be made of.

when i decided to pursue writing seriously, i knew some kind of online presence might eventually matter. i started an instagram, but noticed my focus shifting towards what “did well” online: short, feel-good, pithy quotes. i felt myself chasing external validation and knew that if i continued, i’d lose writing again.

i focused on longer forms instead: a novel, a shorts collection, a poetry collection. these gave me the space to fully exhaust a question, to examine it from multiple angles, to arrive at a hard-earned universal truth, to capture some complex facet of reality and think, “ah, i understand now.”

as i grew more confident, i told more people what i was doing. “where can i read your writing?” they’d ask. “nowhere yet,” i’d say. i still resisted social media, but somewhere along the way, i tried to reframe and asked a better question:

how might i use instagram to share my writing life in a way that is sustainable and brings joy?

for the past year or so i’ve been meditating on this q… which brings us to today, this account, this post.

thank you for following my writing journey.
