Meanwhile Spotlight October @helenatraill 🎨✨

Part painting studio, part design studio, part creative chaos… welcome to Helena Traill’s container at @willwayyard!

Colourful landscape paintings, commissions and works in progress share the space with @noohstudio_, Helena’s digital design practice. It’s a container where ideas can take shape on canvas and on screen. 🖌️💻

Her creativity reaches beyond the container doors too. As the founder of @bristolpleinairpainters, Helena brings together a growing community of nearly 100 artists who meet monthly to paint Bristol together. 💗

A lovely example of how one studio can be home to several creative passions, while helping connect people across the city.

Mural 2 - Central Map @st_saviours_yard - In Bloom 🪷🌿

The second mural took a little longer to complete due to the insane heatwave over the summer (and I have especially translucent skin that sets alight very easily!) but was based around the ever growing life that is blooming here at the yard. I wanted to create something fresh and bright as each unit is now settled in and filled with life, too.

I am often thinking about how I describe what I offer.

One day (once my practice is established in Norwich and I don’t need to be on fresha hehe🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🌟🌟🌟) I will be able to simply offer ‘Holistic Massage’. Because that’s already what all my current options really are!

Then, you come to me with your aches and pains, conditions, stresses and intentions and I take care of the rest - well, we figure it out together.

For now I’m using sub-categories (relaxation, deep tissue, etc.) which are yuck to my soul because it’s allllll holistic massage, these are just techniques!! But it’s a journey eh??

Here’s a little more information about what I do, my trainings and who I can support.

Why do we Glow Ride?

Because the freedom to move around our own city shouldn’t come with conditions. Because women shouldn’t have to plan their lives around feeling unsafe, avoid certain routes or decide that cycling after dark isn’t worth the risk.

Our streets shape who gets to be visible, who feels they belong and who feels they have to make themselves smaller. When people feel excluded from public space, it’s not simply an individual problem to solve. It’s a question of what kind of city we want to live in.

Glow Rides are a way of making that visible. Of taking up space together, celebrating women and girls on cycles and calling for a city where everyone can move around freely, safely and on their own terms.

The best weeks of October are still ahead of us, as we approach the halfway point in the month. We still have two things to offer you if you need a free bike repair or you fancy a completely new experience on your bike.

On October 24th we’ll be offering our last monthly pop-up Dr Bike at @st_saviours_yard before we make a few changes to what we offer for the winter. Find this offer of free repairs at the south end of the Yard behind St Saviours Church.

Our mechanic has over 25 years of industry experience. Over the last few months we have replaced brake blocks, replaced cables, adjusted gears and brakes, fixed punctures, adjusted mudguards and even serviced bearings for free for people like you. No matter how rusty or rattly your bike is, you’re very welcome to bring it down. We’ll repair everything that we can, and can give you advice about the rest.

Then on Thursday 22nd October we’re going to do an unusual late afternoon Dr Bike/Bike Kitchen to make sure nobody misses out on the annual Glow Ride!

We wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to experience the feeling of riding in a group. This Dr Bike/Bike Kitchen will be an opportunity to get your bike fixed so it’s ready for a 45 minute illuminated roll through the city, and it will also be an opportunity to get your lights attached and checked by a mechanic to ensure they’re safe.

So basically we’re going to pop up behind St Saviours Church next to St Saviours Lane at 3.30pm on Thursday 22nd October and then we can ride as a group to the start at City Hall at 6pm. We’re really excited to be a part of this years Glow Ride and particularly excited that the after party is at @st_saviours_yard. It’ll be a great place to finish and enjoy what @sir_tobys_nr3, @mounehkitchen, @sod.bakery and other traders have to offer. Hey spookies! I can't tell you how ridiculously excited I am that our first Halloween in the shop @st_saviours_yard not only falls on a Saturday... But pretty much everyone at The Yard is getting into the spirit of making the day as spookily fun as it can be! @trinketfairydesigns
and I have already started decorating! 👻
We'll be open from 11-7 (as will lots of the other containers) and we'll have a spooky selection of @doodle_donuts finest vegan deliciousness (come early to guarantee your pick of the flavours! Menu coming soon! 👀)

@spookyvalentine will be spinning the spookiest tunes from 12-5...

@sod.bakery will have her usual selection of amazing bakes with a spooky twist...

@thebatandfriends_norwich has painstakingly crocheted 30 ghosts ready to be hidden in the spookiest corners of the yard, ready for a trick or treat themed hunt, where if you find one of the ghosties you may win a prize from one of the small businesses on the yard (or you may get a trick! 🙀)

Mural 1 - North Side @st_saviours_yard - Rock Daisies 🌞
.
You may have noticed I've been painting fewer pieces this year, as instead one of my major projects has been designing and painting two big murals for St Saviours Yard.
.
These snaps are of a little behind the scenes of the concept design and process of the first mural for the yard. Whenever I have creative block, I always come back to doodling rock daisies based very loosely on Edelweiss flowers - Tenacious little blooms that thrive in the harshest most unexpected places.
.
Now that both murals are complete I'm so happy I can show them off properly 💖
It's taken me a long while to complete due to my M.E/CFS, and I've also had lots of lovely people giving me a helping hand on the manual labour end, but massive thanks to Meanwhile Creative for being patient with me and asking me to brighten up the place.

🖤HAPPY SPOOKY MONTH!🖤

We are big fans of halloween and wanted to do a fun event for the occasion!

We will be teaming up with @sl.designz and @broadsidevisualsuk for a cosplay filled day down at the shop. We don't have a lot of space, so photos will be taken outside (we will have a gazebo as well), and of course, we will also be in cosplay!

We will try to have some tables set up outside for hanging out, but the event has been designed to be a quick in and out so that people don't get cold as we can't fit much in our tiny container! <3
