SOMETIMES IT’S THE QUIETER MOMENTS

This week we will begin installing the Two Mountains 4.0 exhibition at the iconic Sabah Art Gallery. On behalf of my co-curator Naoko Ohta and I, we would like to invite you to the Opening Reception this Saturday 12th April starting at 3pm. The event will be graced by the Sabah Japan Consul and the artists who will be present.

In these troubling times, we are easily caught up by dramatic world headlines of conflict, distress, displacement of people, environmental and natural disasters that are the fodder of documentary photographers all around the world. And rightly so.

However, I feel that a quieter, slower pace of visual story telling is as important and vital in understanding the Human condition also.

These photography projects by the 6 photographers (3 Japanese, 3 Malaysians) attempts to do just that - weaving stories that tackle personal struggles, friendship, discovery and memory - encompassing and appreciating the awe of Nature in all its grandeur that are represented by Mt Fuji and Mt Kinabalu.

Often, we use visual images to express unspoken feelings and thoughts through representation. These projects are clear examples of the nuance and subtlety that this art form is capable of.

The artists are :

Atsushi Okuyama - "I imagine touching you from afar with my fingers"
Flanegan Bainon - Bubut Fujisan
Kumon Kentaro - Bundu Tuhan
Stacy Liu - Traces
Nadirah Zakariya - hatsuyume
Yuki Morita - Cairn Anchor

We would like to thank the Sabah Art Gallery for hosting the exhibition and providing the amazing space on Level 3 for us. Special thanks to the Embassy of Japan in Kuala Lumpur and to Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur for their support and grant. Also a mention to the Photographic Society of Japan and Total Special Printing in Japan for their added support and collaboration.

Sabah Art Gallery, Level 3
Mile 2, Jalan Penampang

Opening hours : Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 4pm

Exhibition Dates : 12 April to 8 June, 2025 by @stacyliup

We are now in the final stages of mounting the TM4.0 exhibition in Sabah! See you at the Sabah Art Gallery in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Everyone is invited to the opening on Saturday 12th April, 2025, from 3pm. More info www.twomountains.wordpress.com by @stacyliup

"I began my project by tracing the rivers from Mount Kinabalu on a map. One led me to Kota Belud town, where I learned about Kampung Siasai Jaya, one of four villages known for its skilled Bajau craftsmen who specialise in parang (machete) making.

Fascinated by how the tool—once made for battle—now supports life, I felt compelled to look for a parang craftsman and made my way to the village. Without any leads, I continued to rely on the river as my compass, photographing anything I felt drawn to along the way.

My chance encounter with Encik Ramlin and learning about his dedication to his craft, made me realise that I needed to trust my own journey. Although I initially thought I would document the parang-making process, I realised I was there to capture the traces of life that quietly exists in Kampung Siasai Jaya, sustained by the river that flows from Mount Kinabalu. And how, under one mountain, one town, one village, one man’s life continues to flow like the river.

My heart breaks.
Siargao is my second home.

And it break some more seeing everyone who was affected by Odette.

If you can lend a hand, the following places are accepting donations to help the people and islands affected by the typhoon:

@lokallab

@wavesforwaterphilippines

@isla.ph

@puppypuddlesiargao

There is still little communication coming out of Siargao and we are still waiting to hear directly from our loved ones. I hope we will hear from them soon 🙏

Everyone please take care and stay safe ❤️ by @stacyliup

I have fading memories of Kuala Lumpur being greener than it is now. Although the Bukit Persekutuan (Federal Hill) forest near my house is still standing, for how much longer?
.
Will the forest disappear from my windows and only live in frames?

TOKYO CURIOSITY @tokyo_ga_2020 has opened at The Museum at Bunkamura, Shibuya! Please do check it out if you're in Tokyo and see the many facets of the city ☺️
.
I'm super gutted we're unable to be in Japan for it, but very happy to see the project come to life in this exhibition. I'll try to share more photographs of the space if possible!
.
Many thanks to Naoko-san, @netdandy and the rest of the TOKYO-GA team for putting everything together! ❤️ I'm extremely grateful to be a part of it, along with fellow Malaysian photographers @stevenvllee , @nadirahzakariya and @nanasafiana 💕 by @stacyliup

Hi everyone! I've been a bit MIA, but I'm happy to announce that I'll be participating in two photography group exhibitions soon! 🌿
.
The first being @kl20x20 which runs at various locations around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from September 10 - 20, 2020. One of my photographs will be on display at @kloehotel and is part of my (still WIP) 'Forest Frames' series. Thank you @canonmalaysia for sponsoring the prints for this show!
.
The other is TOKYO CURIOSITY @tokyo_ga_2020, which was initially postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic. It will be held at Bunkamura (The Museum) in Shibuya, Tokyo from October 20 - November 12, 2020 😊
.
Both exhibitions explore a city's past, present and future, and celebrates photography as a means of communication. If you're in KL or Tokyo during these times, please do check it out, and witness the city from the eyes of different photographers! 😊
.
The @kl20x20 and @tokyo_ga_2020 teams put in immense time and effort into bringing these project to life, and I'm excited to be a part of them! Thank you and much appreciation to everyone involved in bringing these projects to life ❤️🥰 @stevenvllee @nadirahzakariya @nurulmunirahrohaizan @netdandy ありがとうございます!

I'll post more about these exhibitions again soon 🙂 by @stacyliup

Just sharing a photograph from my experimental series ‘Subliminal Messages', a reinterpretation and translation of imagery.
.
I'm still not sure what to think of the series, so I have left it in limbo for now 🤔 I may share a few more photos over time.
