Meet Alexander van der Cappelen and his wife Emilia van Zuylen. The two Dutch aristocrats sat for the artist Jan van Ravensteyn and were likely painted on the occasion of their wedding around 1626. Jan van Ravensteyn was a well-known portrait painter to the court in The Hague during what we refer to as the Dutch Golden Age of Netherlandish painting. STAIR Director of Fine Arts Lisa Thomas @lisanadelthomas looks closely at the exquisite level of detail in Alexander's velvet cloak and Emilia's lace and jewels. It is his expert handling and layered painting that bring these two portraits to life. On the reverse, we can see that each was painted on a hand-hewn piece of wood that has survived time fairly well. Visible on each back panel are the various inscriptions that identify the sitters and the dates they were painted. 🏷️ Lot 37: Jan Anthonisz Van Ravesteyn (c.1570-1657): Alexander van der Capellen, heer vande Boedelhof and mervelt 🏷️ Lot 38: Jan Anthonisz Van Ravesteyn (c.1570-1657): Emilia van Zuylen van Nyevelt Take a look closer and browse the full catalogue at stairgalleries.com 🔗 by @stairgalleries
Long before 2026 was declared the “Year of the Cabbage,” leaf-form tableware had graced tables from eighteenth-century Europe to midcentury Palm Beach. At Meissen and Chelsea, eighteenth century modelers made trompe-l’œil tureens and dishes for aristocratic dining rooms. In the nineteenth century, Wedgwood, Minton, and Bordallo Pinheiro brought the same garden whimsy to a wider audience. In the 1960s, a largely self-taught potter named Dodie Thayer took up the tradition at home in Jupiter, Florida, pressing clay onto real lettuce leaves in her garage. Her weeks work was glazed and fired by Thursday night and readied for sale in Palm Beach by Friday. Though demand grew, she kept her production small by design. Waitlists stretched for years, and her clientele came to include Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Duchess of Windsor, Frank Sinatra, and C.Z. Guest. As lettuce ware enjoys a revival, we’re reminded what sets Dodie Thayer’s work apart: Made by hand. The imperfections of each leaf pressed into clay. Shaped, glazed and finished by Thayer herself. No two pieces are alike, and every one bears the mark of the remarkable woman who made it. Browse decorative arts in Confluence of Design, including nine lots of Dodie Thayer porcelain at stairgalleries.com by @stairgalleries
Confluence of Design: A Private Collection from a Stanford White Fifth Avenue Residence is a collection that spans centuries, all of which lived comfortably together in one of the most intact Stanford White Gilded Age mansions Completed in 1906, it is one of only two of White’s Manhattan townhouses that remain single-family residences. Set on the Cook Block overlooking Central Park, this grande dame of Gilded Age New York commands twenty-five feet of Fifth Avenue frontage and sixteen thousand square feet of interiors. It stands as a testament to the architect who shaped the city from the Washington Square Arch to the original Madison Square Garden. 🔗 Explore the interiors and browse highlights at the link in our profile #TheGildedAge Interiors 📷 Tria Giovan by @stairgalleries

A collection of works by Dame Lucie Rie will be offered in our Modern & Contemporary Fine Art and Objects sale on November 12. Rie trained under Michael Powolny at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna before settling in London in 1938. She began by making buttons for the fashion industry, then turned to austere, sparsely decorated tableware that drew the attention of modernist interior decorators. She is best known for her footed bowls and flared vases, made in porcelain and stoneware. Glaze was applied directly to the unfired body and fired once. Decoration was restrained to incised lines, subtle spirals and golden manganese lips, leaving the thin walls of the vessels to speak for themselves. Browse these featured lots 🏷️ and register to bid at the link 🔗 by @stairgalleries

Mont-Saint-Michel, the iconic tidal island of Normandy, France, has captivated European artists for centuries. Its soaring medieval abbey and dramatic coastal setting have appeared in illuminated manuscripts, religious imagery, and landscape paintings. Balancing spiritual significance with natural grandeur, it has remained an enduring symbol of medieval heritage and artistic fascination. German landscape artist Hermann Eschke travelled extensively in Normandy and Brittany beginning around 1850. This dramatic view of Mont St. Michel is one of many landscape and marine paintings made by Eschke during this period in France. 🗓️ The Fine Sale Thursday, October 22 at 10AM ET 🏷️ Lot 321, Hermann Eschke (1823 -1900): Mont Saint Michel, Oil on canvas, 1858 by @stairgalleries
